IOWA ICON: A simple sandwich has a special place in Iowans' hearts

Full story: WHOtv 17
It's a sandwich that named a franchise, but never really had a name of its own. It looks a little like a hamburger crossed with a taco. Full Story

Yep, it all started in Muscatine. Butcher Fred Angell opened the first store there in 1926.

If you think they're tasteless and greasy, you obviously haven't had a Maid-Rite at Taylor's. They're well worth the trip to Marshalltown!

my great grandparents that came here from europe had several recipes for Maid-rites. mind you,why someone would trademarked, the most generic and plain sandwich of the group? out on the east coast they serve a spicy/hot kind like the french fur traders made here before iowa was a state. my grandparents served a savory style for ST. Pat's called the blarny burger in Emmetsburg for almost twenty years. there are dozens of styles of sandwich like this. i hope some day to try them all!

I grew up in Marshalltown with Maid-rites and they CANNOT be beat. The franchise ones are NOT the same. You can find pseudo Maid-rites all over but in my opinion the only REAL Maid-rite is Taylors!

Everytime I go through M'town I plan it so there's a stop at the Maid-rite. 40 years ago we had our first supper as a married couple there. Had planned to go back for our 40th anniversary this year but the weather had other ideas.

Two of my classmates and I had a roadtrip to M'town for a get together. Where? The Maid-rite of course. The only thing that needs to be served at the Maid-rite is a Maid-rite, chips and a think malt! Leave the fries, foo foo stuff and especially the catsup at the door. Hope your day is MAID-RITE!

Your loss. I drive 200 miles and it's worth every mile! Taylors' are NOT the franchise Maid-rites. They're soooo much better!

My friends and I moved from Iowa to the southwest. 1st stop each of us makes when we go back home is Taylor's in Marshalltown ... their Maid-Rites are the best. And we get them shipped once in awhile when we have the craving.

80 years of customer loyalty and the angst of the present franchise owner, Brad Burt, have proven that Taylor's has beaten it's own path, without hesitance, but with much success. I wish the Taylor family luck in its battle against Brad Burt and his ambitions to shut this Iowa landmark down. Its unfortunate to see a greedy man's pride try and bring down something so cherished by its customers, employees and owners. Many memories have been forged over a mustard pickle and chocolate shake.

Absolutely disgusting.
My Dad is STILL having stomach & intestinal upset after eating one of those grease bombs Saturday,,, he insisted on having one, thankfully, I knew better!

I worked for the franchisee when they bought the rights to the name. There were a lot of changes some of them were for health concerns. There was a lot of controversy and a lot of old Maid-Rites store shut down because of the changes. People are right the new Maid-Rites at the franchise restaurants is bad not sure hows Taylors Maid-Rites escaped some of the change but they did. Brad Burt bought the rights and the name for the whole state of Iowa

I'm originally from Marshalltown now living in Des Moines. I heard that they are trying to get Taylor's Maidrite to come up with a new way of preparing their beef. Due to what inspectors are now after all these years saying is unsafe. For Taylor's to do this they would not only destroy the process but the business as well. I came across this story and being from about a block away from where Taylor's Maidrite is there in Marshalltown of course im in a state of shock. The Iowa legend in my home town where I grew up is looking at having to close for being forced to buy new cookers that will send the company into bankruptcy(wow). So to find more info on this matter I looked on who tv 13 web site and found only this one article about how Taylor's Maidrite is so close to all of Iowa's hearts. I wish that you could look into this matter furhter in hopes of somehow being able to help save Taylor's.

I was transferred to Marshalltown Iowa from Columbus Ohio due to the Lennox consolidation and then relocated to Phoenix to their new factory. There was two things that stood out to me living in Iowa and that was the wounderful people I met and Maid Rite sandwichs. So I must ask the wonderful people in Iowa, Does anyone has the recipe to the Maid Rite sandwish? My email address is:

The BEST Maidrite sandwich is from NEWTON, Iowa. If YOU have not had theirs, you cannot make a comment. YOU just don't know!
