I thought you had to learn English to become a U.S. Citazen?
So why are the children being Forced to learn Spanish?
And why stop there, is Bosnian, Chinese, and Hatian next?
I didn't see anyone making the rest of the class take my
Family's language in grade school, Native American Indian.
Oh, and let's not forget about Arabic, Hindu, and Greek!
Are you going to make all the Spanish Only speaking adults
learn english as well?
There can be lots of hurt feelings over FORCING a small child
to learn a language of a nationality different from his own.
We had the choice in JR High school to take French or Spanish.
It was a choice. This IS still AMERICA isn't it, where you
have to freedom of choice, or is this now the South of the
border states?
I don't see my ancestors getting a national history month or
the schools making the studients lear Indian, and we were here
FIRST.

Just another Obamanation happening in MY country!! I gave up 24 years of my life in service for my country to defend our way of life, language included, and THIS is what WE VETERANS GET?!!! I'm not impressed!! Good thing I pulled my child OUT OF SAS!! Bunch of liberal, feel-good, ignorant Marxist's!!

This is a private catholic school. Tuition is based on being a member of the church or even being catholic. It may be a great program, but for non members I do not see a bunch of parents running to sign kids up at $4000 a year. Its a five year program, 20 grand to speak a second language. Not in this economy.

Goodness people. How does one make the leap from offering a foreign language as an "option" to letting millions of illegals running the country and not paying taxes. For those of you who are contributing to this forum and writing at 2 and 3 in the morning I wonder if you are employed.
And for those of you who do not understand the word option it means choice. Which is what this program is an option to students and their parents from what I understand. This is the United States and we do get to make our own decisions except on taxes which are not a choice last time I checked. I would hope that all service men and women are proud to serve their country so that people can decide things for themselves. I have many veterans in my family some have made the ultimate sacerfice. I see nothing wrong with being able learn a foreign language.
I am not a Liberal. I am a conservative card carrying Replublican and voted as such in every election. One thing more to chew on. Last Spring a Mexican guy I work with asked me why does everyone here in the U.S. get all excited about Cinco de Mayo? So I asked him, "Why isn't it a big holiday in Mexico?" He replied, "No not really. We celebrate the 4th of July in my town because so many people have worked in the U.S. and it means more to us."

Great idea! These kids will be able to learn as many languages as they want, in other words they will have MORE CHOICES than if they only speak one language.
If you want them to speak more languages that's great and maybe you should start working on getting something like that set up.

Completely ridiculous! We should insist that these Latino immigrants learn English. Our common language is what binds this country together.

This is going to be an incredibly divisive problem in years to come. It will be similar to the Sunnis versus the Shiites in Iraq, or the Christians versus the Muslims in the Balkans. We must blend our cultures, not facilitate their separation. WAKE UP BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

Wow, FortyFive, I can see why you left SAS. Yes, ignorance is part of the equation here but I'm sorry to say it's on your part.
Now that the dead weight like you is gone, we can get on with the task of offering our kids great tools like a second language.
Oh, and by the way, liberal has nothing to do with it. I've been a Republican since BEFORE I became a U.S. citizen. Yes, you read right. Before I could vote even. My native language isn't English, yet you don't see any problems with my language here, do you? I can actually function in 3 languages, imagine that! And I made the Honor Roll in 3 languages too.
So why don't you go do some research on this topic? Yes, there's lots out there and if you had read even one page of it you wouldn't be asking "says who".
And before I forget - THANK YOU. Thank you for your service to our country (notice I said OUR)and thank you for getting out of our way so that we can become an even better school and parish. Best of luck to you.

Rasbo, did you read the story? This program will give our kids (English-speaking kids)a second language, it matters not what language that is. The Latino kids are already learning English - have you heard of English Language Learners (ELLs)? Yes, they are learning English. Just like every single group of immigrants for the past 200-plus years did. And if they will be bilingual, why can't our kids be bilingual too?
By the way, Christian vs Muslim has nothing to do with this. If it's divisive, it's because of people like you that want to make it so.

Wonder if you know "SEDITION" comes from the LATIN word seditio? I doubt a group of kindergartners is going to overthrow the US government. A Fifth Grade Fifth Column? Get a clue, this is about education and possibly getting a step up, both of which probably escaped you.

Perhaps time and money would be better spent with an "English-emersion" program for the children of Latino immigrants. There is nothing wrong with children in kindergarten learning a foreign language, but the premise that "America is becoming a bilingual country" is false.

The Catholic Church is so broke it is desperate for more membership. Any activities such as supporting illegal aliens, who happen to be mostly Hispanic and catering to forcing Americans speak Spanish rather than Hispanics learning to speak English in our own country is an embarassment.
The Catholic school is a private school so it can do whatever it wants, but remember - this is America and we speak English here. You are free to learn any language you want but to do business speak English.
There should be a law mandating English as our national language.
Part of a healthy and strong country is our history, language and values. If you agree with me "please press 1 now". BTW - I'm almost fluent in Spanish.

Wow! People, people, relax! This is a program for English speaking kids to learn Spanish. It has nothing to do with immigration. Like it or not, we live in a global society. A second language will help these kids get good jobs with companies like John Deere and Pioneer who do business with South America. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Remember the good old days when Junipero Serra was translating the catechism into the language of the Pame Indians, and teaching Spanish to indigenous peoples all over North America?

Full circle, people, full circle. St. Anthony's has enrollment levels to reach, and it's much better that children receive a solid education. You should see the list of St. Anthony alumni!

Ah! Ignorance! It once again rears its ugly head. If you really were "almost fluent in Spanish" you would understand what this is about.
By the way, mandating English as the national language won't stop people from speaking whatever language they want. This IS a free country.
I won't even address the religion issue. Again, free country. So you are free to be ignorant. Have at it!

I am born and raised in Iowa. I also speak Spanish fluently, thanks to Uncle Sam. When I was in the service, I was sent to learn Spanish. I taught soldiers from a number of Central American countries how to fix helicopter engines. I am retired now, but during my career, the ability to speak Spanish opened many doors for me. It bought me promotions, and it provided me with with untold numbers of opportunities that I could take advantage of to move up the ladder. The world is getting smaller every day, and the inability to speak more than one language is handicapping our kids in the world economy. It is just another reason we can not compete.

We need a English only law in this country.
This is an English speaking country, and I do agree that those who come to our country should learn our language, however; if you have studied language learning at all, which I doubt you have, we are all born with the ability to make any sound from any language; if we are not introduced to that sound by age 4, we begin to lose the capability of pronouncing that sound. As the article mentions, these students are expected to be fully bilingual by fifth grade, which is fantastic because it is proven to be much more difficult to learn another language once a person reaches somewhere between the ages of 10-12. Again, I believe that those who immigrate to our country should learn our common language, as an adult who has studied other languages, I can attest that it is much easier said than done. By integrating these children at a young age, an age where it is proven they can retain the language better, we are equipping them with the tools they need for a much brighter future.
While many are looking at this for ease of business opportunities in other countries, lets take a different look at it. In many cases, the brains of those who are bilingual are able to make cognitive connections in other areas much easier than those who only learn one language, and it doesn't matter which languages are learned. For those seeking careers in medical or legal fields, many terms are latin based; I can vouch for having a much easier time with medical terms than many of my fellow med students, due to my Spanish speaking background.
This program is to be commended. For those ignorant enough to bash it, try learning another language as an adult. I hope you learn to have a little compassion for the immigrants who try learning our language, but have a difficult time learning as an adult. I think then you will see why this program is so valuable to our youth.
By the way. It doesn't sound like this program/Spanish is being forced on us. It is an option, and if you don't like it, you don't have to enroll your kids in it.
