Bring back Dean Rossi. I remember his first game. It was with Latrobe. He had his players enter the field running through Latrobe's team that was doing warm up exercises. I think the final score was Latrobe 48 Derry 0.

Coach Po and his staff are good men and family men. They've worked very hard as coaches. But it is time for a change.
There offensive and defensive systems came from the internet. The last five years have shown that its worthless! Its amazing how many good, winning coaches left Derry because these coaches will not change or listen to anyone. You would think after only 10 wins in five years, and giving up an average of almost 35 pts per game, they would change.
When your offensive coordinator is coaching midget football every night and a game on Sunday, he canít attend nightly meeting or get a game plan ready on Sunday because he's coaching midget football. For five years he has cheated both programs by doing this. It seems he's trying to control Derry football from the bottom up. As you can see, itís not working... at all!!!
Because the varsity staff would rather loose without their help than win with their help, Joe Boggio, Joe Krinock, Jeff Boggio, Nick Alesi, and Shawn Horwat, just to name a few, have left Derry football. Three of these coaches have over 20 years of winning coaching with varsity experience. Latrobe head football (coach Reitz) has asked Coach Joe Boggio to join his varsity staff. WOW! coach Reitz has won WPIAL AND STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS and he sees what coach Boggio can bring to his program, but the coaches at Derry wonít would rather get advice from the internet. I also heard that coach Alesi has a few varsity programs interested in him. I know they both want to coach at Derry. We need to keep these coaches in Derry because, trust me on this one, we don't want them on the opponents' sidelines!
Coach Boggio and Coach Alesi had a winning season every year, finishing 1st or 2nd. There was a comment on this sight saying they were coaching against jr high gym teachers that needed some extra cash. They coached against teams every week that had 30 to 40 more players than them, were sometimes AAAA schools, and were one grade older than at least half the kids on Derry's team. They didnít complain. They just beat them! If you donít think they are important to Derry football, just look how fast the 7th 8th 9th grade team went down the tube. Oh wait maybe these schools suddenly fired all the jr high gym teachers. Also think about where Derry football would be if the Jr high team was loosing like the varsity for the past 5 years!
The players only go through high school once and they deserve to be successful. They want these coaches to coach them because they know they will WIN! If you donít believe me just start asking players and they will tell you.

From the looks of things u guys want a coach with college experience and a degree with some coaching experience. I agree but it also needs to be a complete outsider. Some who can be a full time coach. So the degree should be a teaching degree. So that the head coach doesn't have to worry about anything outside the program I also believe that it need to be someone young the game has changed and these kids respond to young coaches because they understand what's going on in the world today. But it defently needs to be an outsider for the reason that the coach won't be influenced by the community. He will be able to come in and run his program without worrying about all of this , also he won't have premotion to play certain kids because of past achievements or failures he will be able to make his own choices. That will be the only way derry will be succesfull.

sounds to me you know an outsider who wants the job, that is young and a teacher.the derry football players know who they want to coach them. And by the way they did go to college, and have proven for many years that they know how to handle parents and players, and yes WIN !

But do agree or do agree that they need to get someone from the district. Getting someone from the district will cause more drama. Go outside the district and lessen the drama. I don't know po or boggio they both sound like great guys but they need to hire someone who is gonna shock the program from the ground up. Make the kids work from the off season till the first game to earn a spot. And yes I know a guy who has experience coaching as a d cordinator and has college experience and has a teaching degree and is a young coach who is very respectable and has great ideas for any program he takes over.

I don't know if there's any right/wrong answer about hiring in or outside of the district but it seems in this case going out of the district is the way to go. Derry needs a coach that hasn't been involved in district politics, or have any initial connections to the district. Just because a teacher, cop, or firefighter doesn't have residency in the community in which they work doesn't mean they don't care about serving the community. You guys need a total culture shock, someone who will come, be able to look at the situation without any preconceived notions and from then on put their stamp on the program, build character in young men, and build pride in the community. And outsider is probably right, if you hire a young coach he instantly connects with the players b/c of his age. His credibility only grows if he played college, etc. Maybe you find a guy that really works, someone who continues to build a program and in twenty years he's getting instant respect from players b/c he's been doing it successfully for so long.

Offensive and Defensive schemes don't matter as much as culture. Look at Oregon and Wisconsin. They're both 'running' teams, aggressive, and do it totally different ways. What, I'm sure, they do have in common is a culture of accountability and dependability. That's why it's probably a good idea to hire someone outside, someone who can come in and set a new tone going forward.

this is just a guess . if its the coach i think it is, hes young but not that young. and he coached at derry in the mid 90s . then went to pine richland. Plus his wife teachs at derry. lol like i said just a guess. but if it is who i think it is, yes he is a real good coach. All that matters in the end is the players. there a great bunch and they do have talent.

No that's not him the guy I'm talking about has absolutely no ties to derry. Which would be best for this program because from what I see there seems to be a lot of community drama. And that will hopefully subside because he has no ties. I wish the best for derry but in my opinion the only way u will be able to save the program is with an OUTSIDDER, a teacher, and someone young and somebody who will shock the program from the ground up

There is not an instant fix but something has to change. We all know the definition of insanity..."if you do the same thing over and over and expect different results; that is insanity." has anything changed over the past years at Derry? This is what needs to be evaluated. If things work then don't change (don't try to fix what isn't broken). But what has been working? What should be kept the same? Anything? I think the new AD being an "outsider" is a start since he is not tangled in the political web. He has no loyalty to anyone per say and that is not a bad thing. I am sure he would like to be the person to make right the path and make that his legacy. Is there a person out there who can make a difference? I would think there is...does that person want to come to Derry? Will the players and parents give that person their full support? That is the mystery. Does anyone have an idea who that person could be?

Who's Liz?

And...good! Now whoever gets the job, let's all be supportive and give these people the support they deserve. If Po reapplies and is deemed the most worthy, then we should respect that as well. If not, let's respect whatever decision is made. How exciting for the kids!

To "Finally" I'm Liz Geary if that's the Liz you're referring to. I'm not afraid to put my name to what I write. You do not know what you're talking about. I have been friends with Coach Po's sister for over 45 years. If you think I'd do anything to harm my friendship with her and her family, you don't know me at all. Especially over Derry Football; PLEASE!!! Coaches will come and go but friendships are forever.

yeap, some joke. I've been around Derry athletics since 1977 when I played basketball and volleyball. I've been a all-sport season ticket holder for many years. I love to watch and praise the students at Derry in everything they do. I bleed Blue & Gold so if that's a JOKE!!!!!!!, guess that's me.
