Since Derry has become such a colorful, diverse town in recent years, I think it should have a nickname. In the same way Boston is sometimes called Beantown and Chicago is sometimes called the windy city. Get my drift? Here's some ideas of mine:

-"Stamp Town" because of all the heroin.
-"Bag Town" because of the heroin and/or all the bag people in town.
-"Dirty" Because the town is unclean
-"Silent Hill" Because it's a lot like the town in the video game and subsequent movie.

If anyone else can think of one, post it.

Derry may not be perfect, but I've never seen a town that was. I've been all around this country and there's far worse places to live. I could think of a few names for Derry too but I don't understand "Dirty" it's anything but dirty. If you don't believe me you can sniff our Derry air. LOL

As for you Mr. John Freakin Fedko, Chuck you farley, go back off on your own jack porch. You and your famn damily ain't to smuckin fart either.

since you claim to be the real fedko then i think you are zoned out. the problem with heroin is everywhere in westmd and surrounding counties. why don't you use your influence in a more constructive way. if your so concerned about the problem why not create a concerned citizens zone and try to do something to combat the problem here before it really starts to be like harlem. maybe you should check out apollo stats. before you attack derry.

OMG Thank you!!!!! The wonderful wording gave me the best laugh I've had this morning. But you are so correct. All the years I've been around here - Of course there were the jokes about needing to keep the cheerleaders off the football field -'Derry should be renamed DAIRY'(since we have the ag/hort programs)... but ya know what ... comparing Derry to all the other towns around here ... Derry is boring, there's not much to do unless you're going for a walk or going to the bar ... but at least it's quiet. We don't have the problems with drugs that other places do (greensburg, latrobe, blairsville) we don't have drive by shootings (cornings and eggings maybe) and we don't have hookers walking every street (like the ones that by CoGo's in Greensburg - just down from the crack house). I've been living in Derry for the past 17 years. All in all - it's a pretty damn good place to be.

I do not know what town you are talking about there "Momma Knows", but Derry is full of Heroin, Crack, and Meth. I know far too many people in that town that are users and dealers. Think maybe you should step outside your house every once in a while and take a look around. I grew up in Derry, was once very proud of the town that I came from. Now it is just a septic tank of gossip, drugs and juvenile delinquents. There is nothing for these kids to do, so they run around breaking the law and bullying the other neighborhood kids. The only good thing in Derry now a days is the water. There may not be hookers on the streets, but there are plenty in the Bars. Willing to take the first man they see home to screw, regardless if they are married or single. The gossip, well tell ya what that is the thing that made me leave the town just recently. Too many people there interested in what the "Jones" are doing, than taking care of their own back yard. I moved to what could be truly called a quiet town. Nobody talks crap about the other, everyone greets you with a smile and a hello. The crime rate is so low they do not even have a local cop. The hardest drug you find here is pot and that is hard to find. So take your rose colored glasses off cause Derry is not what it once was!

Sorry if this gets on twice...but where was mammaknows living when Sam Lang was murdered in Derry Twp on March 27, 2007. I wonder if she dosen't read the local papers. There have been to many deaths in the past few years here in Derry. Overdoses....Traffic deaths.....I know of to many children I saw grow up here that are no longer here to remind you....miss mammaknows that their lives were taken from the far to young due to the goings on out here in Derry. Do we have to loose a generation to heroin for the community of Derry to Notice....That absent HEROIN, METH, and CRACK that Derry may return to being one on the nicest places to raise a family.
Suna I'm glad your out....But since you know that Pot is the hardest drug to find where your living now maybe you should know that a pot dealer also often knows heroin dealers, meth dealers or crack dealers....maybe you should keep an eye on what may happen to where you moved.
It is so sad....It is all over southwestern pa. Do what you can to keep it good where you are. I never wore rose colored glasses and you are so right. Derry is not what it once was.

it,s time people realize it's heroin town! the school is heroin high and the rail road is the heroin highway. how many people have head about several school personnel telling students to "leave a candy bar" in your locker. it will confuse the dogs. yes this happened. the administrators tells the facualty when there is going to be a lock down. whats up with that.
all the dirt bikes and atv's on the tracks and ridge are not just the local kids, how much dope do you think is growing around town? now that we have a drug dog has he made any arrest or do we simple have a family pet going for a ride?

Its really sad to hear all of these names, I graduated a few years back from this town, and married my school love, but now there is nothing to keep the town going, so the black hole, might be a good name, or the science project. Maybe we can get Waste Managment to turn it into a dump! should not need much work, we can even get the town official to step in as fertalizer! All the Bull they sling, might have something good for a change!

What is there in a name? Nickname are sometimes not a real way to go, but we still sound off with some real zingers herein. But mine would be "crossroads" because we are at the center of the events and crossroads of development. Many of which are not favorable, and some that will never get implemented. The real bus drivers are the comunity, the engine is council, once the busdiver is chosen, we will see the clear path for our future, just need to make the right turn in November!

I agree with DeRito. Crossroads is a good nickname for Derry as it has reached a point in which there either must be change or decide to be a total loss. I guess we will know in November how Derry really feels about how we move forward or dont! I for one am voting for the change. Its time for new pride in Derry and what it is going to stand for!

There are several new names on the ballots this fall, and ones that need to be wrote in. Mr. Melville is one to write in, his voioce and determination has been the derry Pride of long past. He is a good addition to our town, so be sure and write him in.

Great new names for this town, But still like the original one Derry, can we go back to that one, and pick a new path of leadership too. The same old same old is not working anymore.
