This is an interesting technology, but my first thought is that its shelf life wouldn't be too long. If people already have cell-phones, then it would be even easier and cheaper too allow transfer of funds directly between devices. Is the number of checks being written going up or down? It makes sense for banks to have check-scanning abilities at their ATMs and branches -- for as long as checks remain popular -- but what's the point of rolling this capability out to consumers, given that banks clearly would prefer them all to "go paperless," anyway? It's a puzzlement.
