LUBEC, Maine - There's no crime wave in Lubec, but the Washington County border town is exploring the option - and the costs - of creating its own police department.
Once you go down that path, u inevitably change into a policed community, whether you like that relationship or not. And, u inevitably create a momentum towards preserving the policed-state, rather than adjusting your community infrastructure to its then-current needs. There are other options for a small community, such as college campus type or home-owners association type security with state police back up for true investigative needs, temporary parking/traffic officers (like Bar Harbor uses every summer, etc. A small community like Lubec really needs to keep its long term infrastructure commitments in mesh with its size and capacity.
