DEMING HEADLIGHT, LUNA COUNTY, NEW MEXICO, JUNE 26, 1914 DEMING WILL BE MECCA JULY Special Trails From All Over State Will Brief Thouwndi Two Days of Sports, Military Exercises and Dancing Will Furnish Amusement As Independence Day approaches the preparations for Deming's two day fiesta are assuming concrete shape and the program that will be given will mark an epoch in the history of celebrations in the southwest. The ball will start rolling on Friday morning with some spectacular work by the boys of the 13th cavalry who will stage a musical drill and a number of other specialties that will keep the spectators on their toes every minute. After they have finished their stunts the big riot will occur when the ball teams representing Hurley and Santa Rita will meet on the diamond to try to push one another further down in the percentage column. These teams are leading the Copper League, with Santa Rita holding a slight edge so far, but Hurley says that this condition is to be altered immediately. Every time these two aggregations have met this season they have fought every inch of the way and they both claim that they are going to show Deming a real ball game when they meet here, and that friendship will cease as soon as the umpire dusts off the home plate -and-- yells, "Play Ball!" A special train will be run from these towns to Deming and a big crowd of rooters will show the Deming people what baseball enthusiasm really means. The committee wants the cowboys and others who are going to take part in the wild west part of the program to appear in their chaps, horsehair hat bands, jingling spurs, and all the rest of their warpaint, as moving pictures of the day's doings will be taken and the committee wants the boys to look their prettiest so that the dwellers in cities may see that New Mexico still holds some of the romance and glamour of the west. A diversity of entertainment will be offered on Friday night. The tennis court will be transformed, for the dance, into a dancing pavilion where those who like this style of amusement may dance to the music of from anyone who has rooms to rent and who would be willing to take some visitors for the night. Anyone who wishes to rent accommodations is requested( to communicate with Leffler Field, giving the number of persons that can be taken care of rates, name and street address, so that visitors will know just where to go and what they will have to pay. The following persons have charge of the different events and will be glad to furnish any information regarding them that may be desired: James Tracy, races; G. W. Rutherford, industrial floats; E. L. Foulks, decorated automobiles; Charles Williamson, carriages; Sam Watkins, wild west; C. R. Hughes and P. A. Hughes, baseball; Mrs. Mahoney and Mrs. Thurmond, state float; Leffler Field, rooms. Any person who desires to get a few suggestions on the subject of decorating automobiles or carriages for the parade can do so by calling on N. A. Bolich, who has a number of original and striking designs which he will be pleased to show and which may be the means of furnishing ideas that will go a long way toward helping to make the parade a success. The program, with the line-up for the parade, will be definitely announced next week, with all the events in their proper order and with the prizes and conditions governing all the events."
And that's the way it was 100 years ago
