The Union Pacific Steam Locomotive is scheduled to arrive in Deming on Nov. 9 between 11-11:30 a.m.
Wondering if any city/county officials and public are planning on being there to welcome it in. Might be a great opportunity to get some pictures taken.

The NM Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces will celebrate the state's centennial with an exhibit commemorating the centennial of New Mexico's statehood. It will be one of the largest in the state, opens on Thursday and runs through Sept. 2012.

Don't forget: Deadline for NM Centennial Gardens Project is Jan. 13. Check out details on the NM centennial website. Schools who have community gardens and limited resources should check this out. You may qualify for a grant or funding.

Radio vignettes on NM history will showcase NM's colorful past. 2 minute oral history vignettes in a radio series produced by the NM centennial steering committee will be broadcast next year during NM's centennial while instrumental music of the state song, "O' Fair New Mexico" will be heard in the background. Hopes that NM history teachers and radio stations will use the series are expected.

Did you know that the birthplace of our state song "O' Fair New Mexico" was Lordsburg? It was written by Lordsburg resident Elizabeth Garret, daughter to famed sheriff Pat Garret, who killed Billy the Kid.

Some of Deming's centennial activities include a trash can painting contest with completed work done by Mar 3, the DAC plans many shows for each month next year, Deming museum hosts an artist that will showcase art from each county in the state, and on Jan, 7 two speakers, Dr. Richard Melzer will speak on why statehood took so long and Bayne Anderson. Deming's C of C encourages everyone to fly their NM flags on Jan. 6. And Chaparral School is planning something special at the Mimbres Learning Center on Jan. 6.

Pres. Taft signed NM into statehood at 11:35 a.m. mountain time on Jan. 6, 1912. It would be incredible to hear the town bells ring throughout NM all at the same time on Jan. 6, 2012. You only turn 100 once NM.

A couple of "Centennial" billboards on I-10 commemorating NM's 100 years of statehood could help promote our state and attract tourists. The Dept of Tourism did a great job with their "Catch the Kid" campaign to bring in revenue to our state, maybe the billboards could be used to promote NM's centennial as well.

Good idea with the billboards to promote the statehood theme. Other ideas are: purchase banners and display them on a prominent street in your town, local businesses could do window displays, initiate a poster or essay contest, host a concert with music from that time, work with your local radio station and set up interviews with longtime citizens or made up impersonators of famous people in New Mexico, have an antique car show, parade, street festival, scavenger hunt, wine and cheese tasting, organize a community picture at the museum or courthouse, help the environment which Deming has done a great job so far with citywide cleanup, recycling programs and trash can contest. Art shows, lectures, school programs, create a video. Just a few things to promote our statehood celebrations.
