The county has taken Starmax over once again. The manamgement could not pay the rent. They were there a year? Why is it that an eight million dollar cannot generate five thousand dollars a month in rent? The Deming Chamber just gave these guys money, What did they do with that money?
The last improvement they were going to make was an out door patio which they were going to pay for out of pocket. The county commission gave the go ahead even though they could not pay the rent on time.

correction should be ''eight million dollar facility''.

What ever came over you to ask such a thing? As if there is some correlation between what government spends on a project and what that project actually ends up being worth. Even if we blew through $80 million on that outfit, a private concern can only raise so much revenue from customers who walk through it's doors.
Put more simply, customers choose how much they want to spend. Taxpayers have no such choice.

Still, I'm glad we have that facility. Our kids need it. Perhaps the answer lies half-way between -$10,000 rent and +$5000 rent.

I just wanted to restress that there are many kids who use that complex and are grateful for it. Parents are grateful that they don't have to drive 60 miles to the next town to take their kids to some sort of entertainment. Some kids don't have any money and that place is ALL THEY'VE GOT even just to walk in and look for friends.
It'll take some effort, but the county will find a good fit for tentants.

If Starmax becomes a county operation with county employees, it will bankrupt the county unless the vast majority work 18 hours a week or less. With county benefits (retirement, health insurance, overtime and holiday pay)the payroll would be staggering for such a facility. If the county could get $10 a month in rent and not have any other financial obligations it would seem they would be better off. The books really need to be made open to the public. The loss of the facility would be bad for Deming (retiree recruitment, etc), but the county operation could be financially devastating.

The county is hiring a person to over see the facility. A forty to fifty thousand dollar a year employment with county benefits. The County contract so far has not been one people can stick with. In hiring a person to over see the facility it is a county operation. The commission just apporved a four hundred seventy thousand dollar purchase of new equipment for the movie theater. The old managers were going to pay for part of it. Did they?
I think the County needs to sale this and let someone else take it over. If you want to create jobs the government should not compete against the private sector more government does not create jobs in small towns it turns them into ghost towns. County owned bars and movie theaters its not working for us. I am a Land lord of this facility and I don't like the fact that my investment has not seen any return since this venture opened. If you own property in Deming or Luna County you are a Landlord of this facility and you do have say so in your tax dollar investment.

Both of you are making sense to me; except for one thing. It won't take hiring on a new $45k/yr + benefits county employee to figure out what would make this facility run at county cost vs. tenant profit.(what the heck is WNMU students or professors good for when we need them?)

My advice is to get rid of the 'government worker + bennies) approach and farm it out to WNMU for free. Give them 2 months with the past 2 years of facility books and come up with a proper rent and upkeep agreement)

Barring that, I'll do it for free.(smirk) The county would just LOVE to see me wandering their halls and pouring over their files with a credential badge.

My wife and I used to go to the movies every Friday, since the opening of Starmax. Buying supper there and snacks for the movie. I have a concealed carry license and always use it. But since the posting of the signs "No Firearms" my wife and I don't feel secure enough to go there any more. I understand that there is no place for open carry in a movie theater. Making this building a "guns free zone" is a very bad idea. After much investigating, it was found that that the Aurora shooting was done in a "gun free theater". and that the killer was looking for one to do his damage. This is a very dangerous town. That is why there are so many Federal, state, and local police that live in this town. Does this town want a Aurora in Deming. Support concealed carry in our movie theater. We will not only protect our families but yours. That sign is costing our theater greatly needed income. My wife and would like to get back to going regularly. Remember only the law abiding will leave their guns in there car(not good), the criminals are still carrying.

Movies were not the whole problem. When management does not act on complaints, people dont come back. I used to work there when Bill took over and when I would relay a customer complaint to him his response was "I dont want to deal with that right now." Go Figure....

The main reason why you cannot is because of the bar. If it was just a Restaurant Beer & Wine license you would be able to. But it is a full service liquor establishment and it is a felony to carry your weapon inside the building.

I believe your wrong. I just can't go into the bar or drink booze. That sign only came up in the last year. Been carry at movies since it opened, and so have many others. If your right, guess we won't be going the the movies here in Deming.
Why is there a bar there anyway. Can you take booze out of the bar area? when bowling?

Speaking of felony, It should also be a felony for the county to have a bar''county owned'' funded with the tax payers dollars as well as a governmental liquor license. The liquor license can't be in the countys name so it has to be in the county managers name. Think about that. I would think if the county can force people to be part owners of a bar against their will then why should they not be able to carry a weapon inside? The county set the standard for bending the laws and finding a way to do it with your tax dollars. I would think if you feel the need to carry a gun so you can sit for a movie that Deming is not the right place to live in.

Awff yuh high-horse there, partner. Small county-run airports have had restaraunt/bars in their terminals for as long as I could crash into the curb and stumble into one.

Yes you can, they serve on the carpet only. They are supposed to make sure you stay within the carpeted area with your drink.

I'm in the liquor business, no weapons allowed where liquor is sold, whether its packaged or by the drink. Liquor being the keyword here. Beer and Wine only establishments fall under different law. And that is still at the establishments discretion. They can ask you to remove your weapon or leave.

Yes they have bars. Have you ever heard of a lease? The county does not own the liquor license the airport bar owner does. They lease the space at the airports and they have to pay rent to stay there. They have to generate income for the city. In Deming they raise your property taxes to fund your entertainment. Its not the bar I have a problem with its the fact that people did not know that was part of the entertainment complex as it was NOT on the ballot. More people than not thought they were voting for a bowling alley and mini golf, the county owned bar was a surprise to most of the voters. It was on the PLANS if you went to the court house and said let me see the plans the word BAR or sports bar not on the ballot. Deming got slipped a Mickey on this. Whats done is done.We now have a 8 million dollar ''money pit'' that is sucking dollars out of the county and not making any money. I wish Luna County the best in finding a way to fix this mess. Even the commissioners would like to sale it ASAP.

Maybe if we didn't have 5 damned police departments here in town just itchin' to bust someone who drinks ONE and then heads home, that bar would make it's potential in profit. Boo-friggity-hoo that they got a bar license in the first place! What's the skin off your nose?

Here's food for thought. The County isn't the signer on the liquor license. A local is. That's not right. They should be shut down. This person doesn't work there or for the county. The new manager is the county managers administrative assistants boyfriend. Yep.

The County is not able to put every property owners name on the liquor license so they put it in the County managers name. It was in John Sutherlands the other county manager name until the new manager was in place. Read County commission minuets, one meeting for the transfer.
