the helmet was strapped to the side of the bike where it did the most good, the muffler was not scratched.

You can be sure the Slap on the wrist will sting for about 30 seconds than all will be forgotten. Too many Idiot drivers, too many Idiot comments about Helmets in a state that DOESN'T require them. Same story this weeek in South Carolina, except the biker WAS wearing a helmet and he's just as dead.

Shame on you people. Regardless of wether he was wearing a helmet or not, he was someones father/husband etc. IF the person that turned in front of him, had obeyed the law, and yielded the right of way to him, then he would still be with his family. It's not that there's to many bikes on the road, it's careless drivers that we have to many of. I ride, and since I took the safety class, it has made me a better, more alert driver.
May he R.I.P.

Is it possible that helmets don't work? Examine a Department of Transportation-approved helmet. Look deep into its comforting plush lining, and hidden amidst the soft fuzz you'll find a warning label: "Some reasonably foreseeable impacts may exceed the helmet's capability to protect against severe injury or death."

What is a "reasonably foreseeable" impact? Any impact around 14 miles per hour or greater. Motorcycle helmets are tested by being dropped on an anvil from a height of six feet, the equivalent of a 13.66-mph impact. If you ride at speeds less than 14 mph and are involved only in accidents involving stationary objects, you're golden. A typical motorcycle accident, however, would be a biker traveling at, say, 30 mph, and being struck by a car making a left turn at, maybe, 15 mph. That's an effective cumulative impact of 45 mph. Assume the biker is helmet-clad, and that he is struck directly on the head. The helmet reduces the blow to an impact of 31.34 mph. Still enough to kill him. The collisions that helmets cushion effectively–say, 7-mph motorcycles with 7-mph cars–are not only rare but eminently avoidable.
In helmet-law states, there exists a reciprocal relationship between death due to head trauma and death due to neck injury. That is, a four-pound helmet might save the head, but the force is then transferred to the neck. Doctor's found that helmets begin to increase one's chances of a fatal neck injury at speeds exceeding 13-mph, about the same impact at which helmets can no longer soak up kinetic energy. For this reason, Dr. Charles Campbell, a Chicago heart surgeon who performs more than 300 operations per year and rides his dark-violet, chopped Harley Softail to work at Michael Reese Hospital, refuses to wear a helmet. "Your head may be saved," says Dr. Campbell, "but your neck will be broken."

I offer my most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Martin.

Pay no attention to the idiots who post heartless comments. They are morons who need to get a life.

Helmet or no helmet, he was a person with hopes, dreams, aspirations, family, and friends. Noone deserves to be disrespected the way insignificant scom like "Under, Calling, Realist, Dennis and Artie" have disrespected this man. I hope those clowns learn very soon just how quick and certain Karma can be.

Again, My condolences to the family and friends of Mr.Martin.

It is so sad to see how insensitive humans are. The Bible says to love your brothers and sisters and you would yourself. Just think if that was your loved one and some dumb aXX decided that it was nice to post a comment saying "one less driver to worry about" or "He wasn't wearing a helmet" what then. How would you feel. I knew that man and FYI he was a great man. You all should be ashamed of yourself. It is true to say that no good shall come to a person who has evil and impure thoughts. My love is with his family; especially his son (kash) and you haters will remain my foot-stool

you're right, we do write stupid comments on these boards. Anytime anybody loses a friend or family member it sucks. And it hurts to read these comments too after what you've been through. Good luck to you mate, From now on I'll only leave stupid comments about dead cats and the old woman obsessed with the handicaps bathroom stall. No promises but I'll try.

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Virgo

Mercury is turning retrograde at just the right time, because it's telling you to consider the validity of your long-term aims and aspirations. If they stand about as much chance of seeing the light of day as you do of winning the Lottery, then you need to streamline them or even abandon them and start again. So think about what you want from life and how you're going to get it. Children and romance may be quite erratic during this phase.
