The governor elect wants to make BWC "more responsive to the needs of businesses". What does that mean? He's already campaigned on lessening regulations.

Let's do away with any safety requirements. We all know how that inhibits the way work gets done.

Let's hire everyone on contract. That way if there is an injury the worker will have to pay for his own treatment.

Let's make participation in BWC optional so that businesses won't have to pay premiums. That's the ticket. If someone is hurt in a place where there's no coverage then that will be the worker's fault for choosing such a place of employment.

He did not campaign on lessening regulations. He, like any other person, would like to see workers compensation costs go down. He never said anything about doing away with or lessening safety requirements, making people pay for their own treatment, or making participation in BWC optional. Would it be so bad for there to be competition in workers compensation? Since when is competition bad? Everything would be held to the same standards as they currently are. The only thing it would do is maybe reduce costs for businesses. Believe it or not businesses are not out to hurt their employees. If anything they want to see happier employees with better benefits, if they can afford to do it and stay in business.

Businesses will do whatever increases profit. Period. If happier employees mean more profit then fine. Don't kid yourself that it's any more than that.

But hey, if costs can be reduced by whatever he has in mind it's fine by me. As long as workers aren't screwed by any new rules.

How about more responsive to the people that need the benefits?

I challenge you on the topic of lessening regulations. I tried to get the candidate to elaborate which ones he was talking about. Speed limits? Building standards? Meat inspections? EPA rules? Allow for unguarded trenches, no fall protection required? etc. But he wouldn't address them.

I agree that not all businesses are out to hurt their employees, however during my 27 years of making safety inspections for BWC, the level of commmittment to prevention was all over the place. Some valued their people, some said "Tell me what I have to do", meaning they would only do the minimum. Some didn't pay into the system, and one sticks out saying "You know what I love about the illegal Mexicans? When they get hurt, they just disappear!"

How did Buehrer get his law degree while he was the Human Resources Director at BWC. Studying on state time.
