Delaware County EMS and Township Fire Levies

Delaware County has a county wide levy that supports an EMS system. That means everyone in Delaware County who owns property is supporting this. This is an addition to local fire levies.

Why then are our EMS taxes replicated by duplicating Township Fire Levies? Why can't the Townships maintain their Firefighters, but get rid of their EMS folks. Most of the runs in Liberty and Orange are EMS related. Let Delaware County take over the EMS services countywide. This saves the township money and we are no longer duplicating services. I am sure that with the expanded county EMS services to the townships, that the County would need the EMS folks that are presently working at the Townships.

Let's not duplicate services, let's work together.

Del Co EMS is not funded by a countywide levy. It is paid for by a portion of the sales taxes collected by the county. The county partially reimburses Liberty Township and Delaware City because they had EMS systems in place before there was a countywide system. So there is not a duplication of levied taxes.

It is double taxation because the amount that Delaware County reimburses the Townships is a paltry sum that does not cover costs. AND if the townships did away with their EMS Delaware County would step in to provide EMS service at no additional cost. It behooves both Liberty and Orange Township to do a study of the tax savings if both Orange and Liberty became Fire only departments with Delaware County taking over EMS.

I am new to Delaware County. Are you saying I pay for a County EMS service when I buy something at the grocery store and also pay for Orange Township EMS with my property taxes?

If that is the case, that does not make sense. Why not pay once and save money?
Not really

Orange township services are for the fire department and EMS. The small portion of sales taxes collected pays for EMS only, not fire. It does make sense to have both fire and EMS housed in the same location as they go hand in hand and since all of the FF are also paramedics. County EMS stations are much further away than the ones currently servicing Orange. It is possible to fund only the fire department I guess, but with around 90% of the calls being for EMS, it makes sense to keep them as close as possible. This is probably something you should bring up in a public session of your township trustees. However, for this upcoming levy, it is a done deal. If it fails, you will have no fire department and the current county EMS will have to reorganize as best they can to get your area covered on such short notice. Orange did not have to create EMS as well as fire, but I'm sure they felt it best served their needs as the most populated township in the county.

Let's not duplicate services, let's work together.
The county EMS is paid for by a 0.5% piggybak sale tax that was voted in by the people in the late 70's. The funeral home was going to discontinue ambulance service. Delaware ciy, Liberty Towship and maybe Concord Twp had EMS service at that time. The county reimbursed thoese 3 inities a set dollar amount for each EMS run. That dollar amount has went up over the years.
The fire depts. that added EMS services was not part of that agreement.
Some of the fire chiefs in this county added EMS so their run volumes would soar and they would need additional manpower and trucks. How many fires do we have in Delaware County each year? Not many. Hard to justify your kingdom when you have 100 fire runs a year. Then they call every dept around they for mutual aid on every run to further increase run volumes.
I'm not sayingn that we do not need fire depts. I'm saying thatthe duplication of service was done by a few fire chiefs that wanted their run volumes to go way up so the could have even bigger depts.
You need to ask the fire chief and trustees why they feel they need to duplicate the EMS service. Orange twp does NOT even transport most of the patients. They wait on the county to show up and transport because tn thier words "thats their job" So I ask what is the medics on Orange Twps. EMS vehicles job?
