Review of Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic, Wisconsin:
I took in two stray kittens that were badly undernourished and I wanted to get them checked out today, as they were pretty sick. The only option as far as I knew, in Elkhorn, was this clinic. I called in advance to check on their prices and planned to get them vaccinated for about $55 each - which was fine for me. I took them there and a woman did an exam, then the doctor entered for just 2-3 minutes and he told me the sex of the kittens and that they had ear mites (which I knew).
As I left, I was given a bill for $250!!! I was there for probably less than 20 minutes total - and the doctor charged me $51.50 per kitten that he "examined." With him being in the room for just over 2 minutes, I practically paid him $50 per Minute of his time! That is way more expensive than for me to see a doctor, as a human.
When I left, I was pretty upset about it all - considering the $250 did not even include the vaccinations. I was told to come back for them - probably for a series of other charges to be tacked on.
I also saw that the doctor charged me an extra $20 for telling me that my cat had ear mites - which I already knew. They said he did an exam, which I was not aware of somehow. Plus, come to think of it, I didn't ask him to do a special ear cytology exam - without telling me and informing me of the charges in advance. The system there was pretty outrageous to me. If the doc had spent a good deal of time examining them, I suppose I'd understand the outrageous charges - but with just a few moments of his time - it's just ridiculous.
After I left the clinic, I called there to ask about the charges and to explain my feelings on it. I also told them to throw away my files as I'd find another place to go to. I was just trying to care for the strays, who would have most likely died. I was in and out so quickly, with a $250 bill - it just isn't right.
If you are thinking of going to Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic, you may want to think twice. I used to volunteer at a humane society and I know the standard costs - I should have gone to one rather than going to this vet clinic.

Sure they were strays. They are probably yours and you wanted free care. Next time drive the extra 2 miles and take them to the shelter

Hi Phish. I drove all the way to Watertown with my little 4 yr old son just two days ago, to go pickup these two kittens and take care of them. Someone posted an ad on craigslist - she didn't say the kitties were sick, but that they were strays which lived under her home (she fed them only bread).

I definitely did NOT expect anything for free. I expected the prices that they quoted, and didn't expect to have them do procedures without asking me (and charging a lot of money for them). I definitely understand there are costs to having pets, especially sick ones. I just expected the prices which I was quoted, and reasonable and fair service. I called around after leaving there, so I found "Community Cats," in Watertown - so when the kittens are better in a couple of weeks they can get the vaccines and spays. Anyway, Phish - your comment was pretty rude - but that's ok. I Just wanted to inform people of my honest experience there. Times are tough now and prices like that do not help.

Stray cat lady I've been victim of the same situation there. They believe since they are the only game in the area they can charge and do as they like. Never again. There is an animal connection in whitewater and janesville that is quite reasonable. Had a dog nuetered (kinda like what happened to Phish. thats why he is so bitter. Don't mind him he posts crazy stuff here all the time)for $50. Never go to the Elkhorn Vet again.

My horse had gotten sick at a local boarding facility, and i used Elkhorn vet. clinic I took my horses to the clinic they tubed and oiled my horse and gave me a $600 bill and said if he wasn't better the next day he wanted to see him again, the next day he was still colicing and i took him back they redid the procedure and said he may need surgery. The following day he was even worse i called another vet he gave my horse probiotics and oiled him again and gave be a bill for $250 the same thing elkhorn charged me $1,500 for less the 7 days of probiotics. Moral of the story we do have better vets. around for much less money.

Now Ron. You said that molesting children doesn't make someone a bad person. You need to really figure out which side of the street you are going to walk on.

i think what he said was the 18 year old had a pictures that were sent to him of an underage girl out west the boy wasn't charged with molesting. People should understand what they read in the paper should the paper even get it right.

Hi Stray Cat owner! Don't feel bad the same thing happened to me at the Elkhorn Vet clinic. I took my cat in for anal gland express and the male vet came in looked into my cats ears - tried to express the glands - made my cat scream and was unable to express them. My usual vet never had a problem - I was then charged an outrageous amount of money and was told my cat had an exam that she never had. I got my money back after I wrote a letter. Another time I needed an emergency vet at 3:00am and Elkhorn vet came up as the vet on call that weekend. My cat was having an episode she has once or twice a year where she gets a bladder urethra irritation - my reg vet will give a steroid shot and pain med and it's gone in 24 hrs- the vet from Elkhorn clinic told me that she was pregnant and did not feel like coming out - she told me to lock her in a bathroom and shut the door so I wouldn't have to hear her cry(can you believe that one)- I stated that she was the vet on call and I was demanding medical attention for my cat NOW. She came in to help her and tried to make me feel bad about it! I wouldn,t take a dead cat there!
