I was twelve the day of the murders. My friend raced up to me and said that Mrs. Malone had finally gone completely nuts and chopped her kids up. It really wasn't that big of a surprise. We immediately rode our bikes up there but couldn't get close. I too went to school with Todd at Lindbergh. He kept it together pretty well for a kid raised in that environment. I think I know the girl who lived "across the street".

this is crazy, for some reason I was telling my wife last night this story from my youth. I went to Lindberg, Hale and Madison with Kenny. Lived on Batista and remembering going by the house shortly after it happening. I have not thougth about this really since it happened and just looked it up tonight since as she asked me more about it and I could not remember. I guess we are all connected by this travestiy.

My brother Rod said he was at lindberg that day as he had a ceramics class. Here is another one that happend a few years earlier for you older people. The Monroes lived I think on Mt Aguilar (pretty close to lindberg) i went to school with Donny. He had an older brother I think Bobby. His younger brother and buddy were playing with dads gun and if i recall they could not been more then 7. one of the boys ended up shooting and killing the other. I tried to look that up adn could not find anything though. Donny and I were buds but then he broke his leg playing football at madison as a freshman and never saw him much after. Anyway my guess is the accident happened 1970-1972?

When I was six years old I was playing at my friend Kim's house right next to Lindbergh. Realizing I was late getting home, I hurriedly left Kim's and headed home. Russel was in his high chair covered in whatever food he had just been fed. He looked at me with his large almost lemon shaped head and smiled from ear to ear. Later when I rounded the corner to my house I saw several police cars parked outside my house. My mother was waiting outside and ran to me crying as she grabbed me roughly and pulled me to her. I wasn't told until later that my best friend, Kim Maloney, escaped along with her older brothers and sisters from a knife wielding mother who murdered her two youngest children.
I saw Kim in a grocery store a few years later. She walked by me and we just looked into each other's eyes, and kept walking. One of the saddest moments of my life.

I had questions about this incident my whole life. Kimberly was a friend after the event, but no one knew what had happened. This is because she was a sweet little girl. Everybody loved her. She was very popular. I thought it was interesting that our mothers ended up roomies at Patton State.
Thank you EVERYONE for opening your hearts. I think we all healed wounds here. We also reunited a bunch of Clairemontians!
WE ARE AWESOME!!

Court Rules On Slayer
San Diego Union, Page B-3 October 4, 1975
A Clairemont mother of nine who was found guilty of two counts of voluntary manslaughter in June 1973, decapitation slaying of two of her children may be released to a community care center.
Superior Court Judge Franklin B. Orfield authorized yesterday the release of Mary Ann Maloney, 39, formerly of a Mt. Albertine Avenue address, to a care center, provided that she is under 24 hour supervision. She has been held since July, 1973, at Patton State Hospital.
Orfield ruled that if the hospital determines Mrs. Maloney is to be released with more relaxed supervision, she must first be returned to court for another hearing.
She was in court yesterday when hospital aides reported she is no longer a danger to herself or the community.
Mrs. Maloney originally was declared insane and incapable of standing trial and was sent to the hospital for treatment on July 20, 1973. Then she was found guilty of the manslaughter counts, but innocent by reason of insanity, after the court took under study psychiatric reports and the transcript of earlier grand jury proceedings. She was committed to an indefinite term at Patton.
Thanks for your work, Sandy. As I recall the story, the mother killed herself. I read about it in the LA Times, but now can find nothing in their digital archives. What's your memory, or research?

Lynette, thank you for the update. I lived a couple of blocks away from the Maloney's and was friends with Debbie. I think of her often and have prayed for the healing for the family ... I'm so glad to hear she is OK ... thanks again, sue

Wow...
It is amazing to see this online, it's the first I've anything.
We moved away from Mt. Albertine Ct. because of Mrs. Maloney... before she killed her children.
We lived across the street, and my childhood memories are filled with all the odd things that happened. It was scary to walk by her; she used to whisper strange things... I know about the walking naked around the court, and there was one time where she marched up and down the sidewalk along our house banging metal trash can lids together and chanting something.. I can't remember what.
She had a fixation on my mother.. which I won't talk about much here in this public forum... We found out very early on about the killings because the police called our house. I'll never, ever forget this.
I do know that Mary Anne Maloney died of cancer, and I know where she is buried.
It's so tragic and sad...
This all happened before the age of crazy media and the internet. Today, this would be national news.
My mother has an archive of all the newspaper articles that were written. It's good to see it here though, and know that the articles are accessible.
Sometimes, I think people think I'm crazy when I tell them about it!
A coworker of mine grew up on the third block (that's what we used to call it...) She's 10 years younger than I, and she grew up thinking the house was haunted, but never knew why until she met me!
My friend (whose name I have forgotten over the years) lived on the first block... just a few houses in from Albertine Ave... and she saw some of the stabbing occurring. I can't even imagine.:( It was bad enough living 20 miles away..
Sandy, Thanks for posting all of this..
I was 12 when it happened too...
Done with Lindbergh and on to Jr. High..
I wonder if we all know each other?
I'll be interested to see if there are any further posts here!
Sadly, Rev. Dale has passed away as well... He and my mother both tried to have Mary Anne committed, to no avail. It's tragic that the children were killed. EVERYBODY, cops included, knew that the woman was seriously mentally ill.
My parents bought this house somewhere around 1981. It was never disclosed what happened in the home. They began to hear rumors that it was haunted and that murders occurred there. I was born in 1982 and my parents moved a year or so after. They didn't want me to grow up with the stigma of the home. My parents said very strange things would happen there. They don't believe in things being "haunted" but did say anything that could go wrong did: swarms of bugs, a dead coyote being left on the doorstep, not to mention kids thinking my mom was a witch. I've always been curious as to what happened and never found much info until this thread. It is just horrifying, and I am sorry for what people witnessed growing up there and the lasting wounds.

Oh my gosh! I think about this often! I remember it was summer time and it was very hot that day. And me and my friends were listening to the radio and heard the news and said wow that's buy our school! We lived on Broadlawn ST. We road our bikes to the scene and saw the Police cover up the body! I must of been 9 or 10 years old. I am 50 now and live in Seattle! Im thinking June of 1970 1971! I think I remember her sitting in the back of the police car. The house was next to our school! Lindberg Elem. This is so Amazing cause I have tried to find information on this for years! I kept saying to myself did this really happen. I remember walking to school and the entrance to school was next to the house and I would always look at the front lawn where it happened. You never forget things like this. It was horrible for us kids to see something like that. I look at the house on google earth and wonder if the people who live there knew what happen. But as a kid growing up in the Balboa area I also had a lot of fun times!! Someday me and my family will go down there and I will stop and walk around Lindberg elem. And show them the house of Ms. Maloney!!
I was there... we lived on Mt. Adelbert, few houses away. I remember seeing a woman throwing things (body parts?) out of her second story window, and I remember seeing her with a garden hose on her front lawn. Did you live in the area at that time? I'm wondering if we may have known each other?

Okay...so this tragedy happened june 19, 1973. She and kenneth had 7 children ranging in age 3 months to 15 years. There is a divorce recorded the same month and year...seems odd to be able to get a complete divorce in 15 days...especially when they had been married so long. Or were there already divorce preceedings going on....this would explain the breakdown...she was 34, her husband 30 at the time of the murders. Maryanne was 18 when she gave birth to the first of seven children. wow. She served a short stint at Patton State Hospital and ater joined her family.
It's crazy because i was the first horror of Clairemont...I'm sure many remember this event so sad.
I have been trying to find info on this case. I lived in clairemont and moved to mira mesa and couldnt remember where i was when it happened but remember it wasnt far from where we had lived remember it in the paper. I'm51 and i have always wondered if what i remembered was real or not.

She died four years later of cancer.I watched fore her Obit when we hear through Rev Dale that she was in a half way house with cancer. We had lived across the street from her on ALBERTINE COURT.

I've also been looking for info. on this for many years. Mrs. Dale was my piano teacher from 1962-1972, and in '73, I began "apprentice teaching" under her in a classroom at the Balboa Alliance Church just across Mt. Albertine from the Maloneys' house. I wasn't there when this happened, but I well remember how traumatized Rev. and Mrs. Dale were by it all. And I couldn't stand to even look at that house for the longest time. I happened to drive past there today and decided to look again for any info. on the murders. Thank you all so much for your posts, eyewitness accounts, newspaper articles and updates!

Does anybody have information on the 70's case near mt. abernathy when a young mother beheaded her 3 younger children after the father had taken the older kids to the park. I went to elementary school with one of the surviving kids...she was my best friend and i never knew this happened to her until I was older and we had lost contact....
I lived on MT Adelbert. I was friends with one of her sons. We were coming home from swimming at the pool that day when we saw all the cop cars at his house. I was there with him. They were bringing the mother out and she was hysterical. The father drive up just then and she went off at him...something like "your never here..".....

<quoted text>What are you wanting to know about this? I remember this case very well. The house was next door to the pastor of our church.. The pastors wife actually saved a couple of those kids from being killed. She actually cut her 3 month old in half in the front yard in a bassinet, and the others in the back yard. the older kids were actually at school, and the dad at work when this happened.....
I remember this very well. I had moved to the Mid West in early 1973 & my mother sent me the clippings from the paper. My family lived at the end of the street Via Aquario. I was familiar with the Maloney name, but never knew them personally. It was so tragic & heart wrenching!!!

I see that I made a mistake. For some reason, I thought the Maloney family lived at the end of my street at that time. I Googled "ALBERTINE COURT, San Diego" & I see that my family lived no where near the Maloney's, though it still was very tragic. I hope someone reached Maryanne with the good news of Jesus' saving grace, sometime in her life when she was alive.
