I agree with the homeowners. It is great that items are not tossed in the trash but sold and re-used. I rarely see signs from garage sales that have past left on poles or lawns.
Putting a sign out the day before isnt enough time. Some people dont drive pass that house everyday and would be unaware of the sale.
3 or 4 problem cases in a city the size of Allentown is Nothing ! Use yr time for important stuff, like making an ordiance to keep the real "trash" off Allentowns streets !

There are also many homes having yard/sidewalk sales every day of the week in nice residential neighborhoods. This has become their income when they should be running a thrift store with all the junk they put out.

This councilman is another typical big government clown trying to control your life and tell you what you can and can not do on your own private property. I know this a trivial issue, but it is another example of government overstepping its bounds. Why have we given up so much freedom to these people?
I personally think that yard sales are great. The seller gets cash for his "junk." The buyer gets a deal on items that he may not be able to afford "new" in a store. The environment benefits from lower consumption. And you can meet your neighbors that you normally would not have to the opportunity to meet.

My home is in a residential neighborhood not in the middle of a flea market! If I wanted to live in a mall parking lot I'd go there. YES I DO HAVE A PROBLEM with people who want to turn my front street into a flea market for 5 days a week, dozens of times a summer. Go rent a table or stand at the farm market if you want to run a business.

Yard Sale's intent was to pick up a few bucks and recycle them by selling items to someone else once or twice a year. Want to run a business, buy a business permit and go rent a store like everyone else..
OR
just go over to Michael's front lawn he doesn't mind!

Yeah once or twice a year not every weekend for 3 or 4 days. Besides I've gotten rid of plenty of items by just setting them out front with a sign to take them for FREE.

It's not about FREEDOM it's about ABUSING FREEDOM. It's about when someone starts running a business with high traffic volume and skirting the laws that regular businessmen need to follow as well as doing it in a neighborhood where kids are trying to play and strangers invade.

Who cares if you have a yard sale. Running a street clogging business next door is another matter all together.

So now we have neighbors spying and reporting their neighbors. Take the police or whoever away from more important things.

Unless I missed it in the article, it does not say anything about needing a permit...Being from the Borough of Northampton - we have to get a permit that costs $5 to have a Yard Sale, and then they ask you if you have had a Yard Sale within the past 6months, you have to give the dates of the sale, raindate if you like, and ask basically what you are selling...We also are not allowed to put signs on any telephone polls (although many people do)...
But to have signs up only the day of the sale is crazy - I myself look for signs ahead of time.
I just don't understand how a person could have yard sales so many times a year -
I do know that Yard Sales can pose a real danger to children in the area and even adults due to higher volume of traffic.
I would not want my neighbors having a yard sale every weekend.........

Maybe they should get a permit and open a thrift store where Shanty Restaurant on N. 19th Street was. Oh that's right, that would suit you either.

Don't talk about police coming to fine someone about a yard sale. They wouldn't come when our neighbor had a vehicle broken into and a stereo system taken. They said they didn't do that anymore. So they are going to come to a yard sale. I don't think so. This administration better start worrying about important items like CRIME. By the way, Morning Call you are not reporting all the crime that is going on in Allentown like home invasions and murders. Either the police are releasing what is happening or you are not reporting it. Know someone near 24th Street that was robbed this week via an air conditioner being removed from a window. Nothing in the paper. Council get with the issues and leave the yard sale people alone. Who cares. Besides we have to pay all Pawlowsky taxes. Maybe some of these people are using the money for that.

Here's an idea for you, Councilman- concentrate on crime and real problems, instead of figuring out ways to fleece homeowners.

What a scumbag...
