One hundred forty-four dollars ($144.00) are funds that a family may not have available. Let us look at State employees who live in Deerfield Beach. Recently, the Governor decided they could pay 3% of their retirement. For a person who earns,$33,000.00 a year, that is $3,300 and then we add 10% to utilities. Let us estimate utilities (telephone, water, electric) at $400.00 per month, so there is another $480.00 less going into the household. The average loss for this family is $3,780 and this is significant. If the family did not qualify for foodstamps previously, they still do not qualify because of the calculation. Yet, the family needs assistance. Review the census documents on the age population of Deerfield Beach. According to the census, 29% of the population is over the age of 65. These individuals cannot expect a salary increase and those who have invested in the market are certainly suffering a loss. Let us look at the Deerfield employees that were laid-off and now they are expected to have additional funds for taxes. The City Manager wants to use the taxpayers' money to fight ourselves. Why should the citizens of Deerfield Beach pay an attorney to fight against them? Oh, I forgot, the city attorney sits like an owl and does not give a hoot, thus not the best legal advice. Let us reduce the city attorneys salary, the city commissioners and the city managers and maybe they will become more creative in accomplishing their job tasks. Let us ask the attorney if the Deerfield Beach Commissioners can be recalled. I will sign the petition.
