There is a concerted effort to rid one Grand Rapids High School of the current head hockey coach.
I have no dog in this fight, and don't personally know the man, but as the holiday of Festivus nears, it's now time for the airing of grievances.

I will make my determination after the Festivus wrestling tournament.

A group including former NHLer Scott Kleinendorst have recommended he be replaced. Don't really know the details, but the group addressed the school board about it.

Good reason not to believe everything you see in print, or hear, if you watched the school board meeting. A lot of two and three party accounts of events. We all know kids will exaggerate and some parents don't want to push their kids. High School hockey is not a feel good, slap on the back, everybody gets to play game. You need to work hard to get and keep a slot on the team. It's not a tea party people!!

I know this man and the bottom line is, he's a good guy. A man who tries to instill fairness, hardwork, discipline and a love of the game of hockey in his players.

Let me throw a word out there, Slander! Be careful of what you say publicly about someone's character.

Correction on my location. I live in Grand Rapids not Detroit Lakes. Guess I didn't change the Topix town location. Probably doesn't matter anyway!

The truth needs to be told, no matter how inconvenient.

I agree, truth isn't always convenient. What you've read, not the whole truth. There was no attempt to contact the coach by the reporter. There was no mention of the eleven years that La Roque has been head coach and what he's done for the program. The players that have gone on to play at the college, pro and olympic levels. The nonsense a head coach has to put up with, threatening letters, phone calls and parents accosting him in public. Everyone thinks they can do a better job.
Every year there are parents and players who whine that life ain't fair. Things that were said at the sb meeting were second/third party accounts and some comments were repeated out of context.

A whole lot of BS!!

I agree! with Skeptical. GR has and always will be a good ol' boys network from the police, to the highschool.

The man has done great things for the hockey program and yet a couple of people want to burn someone at the stake? Hmmm.

Just wondering if by chance anyone seem the small little news bit Titled "NO COMMENT NEEDED" listed under "LAW REPORT" in the Wednesday November 17th, 2010 issue of the Herald Review?

I was not shocked by the story, knowing first hand that this happens more then alot of parents know, but by that title alone.

I'm curious about who titled it and why they would title an incident like that like it was?? Are you kidding me?

A parent went to meet with teachers about a punishment his son was given for what ever reason that they felt was unfair. And it ended up with him being escorted off of school grounds for being disruptive, feeling embarressed I am sure, not to mention the sons peers seeing it Im sure.

I am in the process of writting to the editor about this because even though I only know what I just mentioned, I bet I can tell U exactly how it happened. I went through it for 4 years strait. It was handled in the way they always handle these types of situations as proven in the article this is posted under.

Although they strongly suggest "Parent Involvement" it always ends with them winning and parents and students not being able to be heard but in fact "BULLIED" into frustration that ends disruptive because it is the only way U may get them to hear you. But in the end they all end up finding no fault in their staff and no reasoning or explanation on how they have come to their decision even though some are still wondering why. And then soon its forgotten and its a vicious cycle.

Why we as parents, victims of this type of 'BULLYING", tax payers, students are not allowed reasoning behind ther dicisions cant find a way to be given why they came to the conclusion is beyond me. So therefore their form of bullying will not end and our kids will be targets as I have seen first hand and I have alot to back that up.

Can no one else see that if we want bullying to stop we need to realize and stop it where it REALLY begins?

Same issue's happen in NH High Schools!! The AD sweeps it under the carpet and the bullying continues....what a joke, but I did get some advice from the school; "How about a private school?"....ARE YOU KIDDING ME. My boys are no sissy's, for sure, but enough with the verbal emotional abuse, would love to be that Hockey Mom that is the one letting the slap shot get out of hand some day!
"Just say'n....but that would be bullying-
and yes, I can skate!
