I heard that the Gerland's store and shopping center at Spencer Highway and Underwood Road will be torn down to make room for the new HEB Plus store. Has anyone heard anything?

That's the last I heard a few weeks ago, but papers at that time had not been signed. Was also informed if it does get built, they will close Center Street store. Call Debbie at city hall. She will have updated info...

That would suck... the Center Street location is much more convenient for the majority of the population. What are they thinking?

It would seem that it would be a better choice to expand into the defunct movie rental area and stay in a centralized location.

Look how much nicer the East Blvd area looks....

building a new store on that part of Center would be like tossing a diamond on a crap pile......

HEB doesn't just make these decisions without first doing their homework. Those that currently shop on Center will more than likely follow them to East. They'll also pick up more business from LaPorte. The East Blvd. store has the ability to be a flagship store, which Center could never be.

I don't see anything about building a new store on Center. I also don't have a problem with the current store or its location.

The only pile of crap I notice is the crap coming from you... but you aren't known for diamonds, either.

Do have to agree with you, hate to see it move.

However I do not blame HEB wanting to relocate. The parking lot can be difficult to navigate at times with the bank customers, along with the cut through traffic from the neighboring business.

If Stripes is still considering to develop in DP, maybe they could move in when HEB moves out. Even if they have already purchased the property at P and Center, they may have an interested party directly across the street to sale. I would think this would be win win for all.

The entire building is too small for the new HEB store in all of its dimensions. The parking lot would not begin to have enough parking spaces. But if one thinks the building and its location will support a grocery store, start planning and line up the financing. Sad it is not being built in LaPorte closer to Lomax.

Then again, since it will only be a shorter distance from Walmart, folks may just decide to pass it by and go down the street where they can get groceries and those few "other things" all at the same time.

The current HEB is just large enough to be a reasonable size grocery that people will use versus paying the higher prices at the convenience stores. It serves a useful purpose at its current location for a significant segment of the DP population.

Yes, I realize that they "do their homework"... it's called projections. However, projections are not proven and often miss their target, as they don't always consider other variables that currently support the existing demographic. This may certainly be one of those. Take a look around... the two groceries that used to occupy the locations at the opposite corner lots of Center & Spencer never had the volume needed to support those stores.

[Now, before someone jumps in and starts claiming that one closed because of bad publicity over their meat... it still was not getting the volume prior to the fiasco and was not likely to survive.]

If the new store is to be a HEB Plus, which I find hard to believe, it could never be located at Center and Pasadena Blvd. However Kroger is building new stores to run against Walmart, so maybe it will be a HEB Plus. It has also been said that the new store is only a part of a shopping center.

Did you stop to think for just one second that your projections might be the ones to miss their mark? I'll put my money on HEB's projections over yours any day of the week. They've built a chain of over 300 very successful grocery stores by doing their homework and acting on the findings. Hell, you couldn't even project the winners of the last DP election.

So, did the HEB staff correctly predict the winners of the last DP election? Are you one of the HEB staff? Are you on the city council?

Do you stop to think or do you just BELIEVE?

Yes, they have built many stores and others have been closed. One can also say the same of many others, such as Randalls, Kroger, Safeway, etc., etc., etc. Hope you didn't put much money on those others that failed.
