Went to Deer Park Lumber today to purchase a couple of boards. I was directed, as usual, by the gatekeeper to go to the back of the yard and wait for an employee, which I did. The employee handed me a couple of boards that were bowed and full of knots. After telling him that I could not use the ones he had chosen, I started looking through the stack for two good ones. He became very upset and stormed off telling me to re-stack everything when I finished to which I replied, "I always do". When I arrived back at the entrance, the gatekeeper began scolding me for "sorting" through the stack and ignoring the employee. I informed the gatekeeper that I was not about to buy their culls and have to throw them away after I got home. I left the yard with both of our tempers flared.
I have been using Deer Park Lumber for 35 years largely because I think we need to support local businesses. From now on, I will go to the big box stores where I can purchase lumber that I can use if DPL continues this policy. He who insults customers deserves to go out of business.

Whatever. Mr. Lawther and his business is top notch. If you have a problem, let him know. He will set it straight!

Mr. truthmayhurt,

I'm sorry that you had a negative experience while shopping in our store. We take pride in our service at DP Lumber, it's the reason we have been in business for 56 years. I would welcome anyone who has a bad experience in our store to bring the issue to me personally and I will do my best to rectify the situation. It would probably be a more effective way to work out a problem than anonymous internet postings.

Thanks, Jeff

Well Jeff,
I would have spoken to you rather than leave, but I assumed it was you who had directed all the "NO SORTING" stencils to be placed in red all over the yard. Or am I wrong in my assumption? I'm sure it wasn't just the employees' idea.

So is your issue with the no sorting policy or with the customer service? Your first post made it seem like it was the attitude the last post seems to be over the no sorting issue which is it?

Seems like they would be two parts of the same thing. I wasn't there, but if the situation was accurately described I would consider both as a hindrance to good customer service. If you give me something free I may have to accept whatever you throw my way. If I am buying something I should be able to choose what is acceptable for my needs, and I would not expect to catch attitude from someone who is paid to provide service. I dont know the poster or the storeowner, but if this is what happened I would not blame the poster for being upset, and a public post from the owner would lose some of its value if the place is posted in red that no sorting is allowed.

truthmayhurt,
Your defamatory remarks on a Deer Park blog are a farce. Go and speak with the man.

I didn't see any defamatory remarks. All I saw was a story of someone who believes they received bad customer service.

Funny, when my husband and I go there, we pick our own stuff out. BTW Jeff, you will only get an anonymous response. All talk, no action. Nothing wrong with y'all's store. Hope you have 50+ more years!

You need to reread the title. Misleading and false.

Most that have been on this forum for any length of time is well aware of who SDJS is and she has never hidden her identity.

However, that being said... that is up to her and/or each individual and nobody is required to reveal their identity in this forum. I can certainly understand why some may not wish to reveal themselves, as I am one of those. This forum is a good medium for folks to say things they may not say in public, as they deal with the public and would not want to alienate a portion of their clients/customers because of a difference of political opinions.

However, before calling anyone else out on posting anonymously, perhaps you should first reveal your own identity. It would make you less hypocritical. On the other hand... also know what you're talking about before making such statements.

BACK TO THE TOPIC...

From the picture painted by the OP, I would think that he made a very good point, as also reiterated in his follow-up response.

In addition, my hat's off to Jeff Lawther for responding to the complaint. While admirable, I also have to admit that it may have been a little weak, since the OP has a very valid point regarding the posting of signs. Therefore, it appears that the employees were attempting to enforce your policies. Of course, that doesn't mean they should react as described and I'm sure that isn't something you would approve of.

Hopefully, now that the employee problem has been brought to your attention, that will be soon corrected through a little training on customer relations.

As far as the red signs... that is a management issue. I would hope that those signs would be removed, as I certainly would not be willing to take just any piece of lumber, especially if I'm working on a particular project and want to ensure the board isn't warped or has few (or no) knots.

I have to give Tucker's Hardware credit... most of their employees usually bent over backwards to ensure customer satisfaction.

Hey, sacktard, for those who haven't been here since dirt spontaneously generated, sdjkxby is an anonymous poster calling out another anonymous poster, so I am, therefore, allowed to call bs, and, I call bs. Maybe, on a day you wake up and make a conscious decision not to be a sacktard, your opinion will matter, oh, about as much as that of a South Houston mega-roach. Until then, it is worth only a fraction of that negligible amount. So, to recap: Sacktard=Opinion<Opinion of Mega-Roach. Non-Sacktard=Opinion=Opinion of Mega-Roach. Your choice. A new day starts in about fifteen minutes, and you have a whole new chance to make a better choice!

No, shitforbrains, you aren't allowed to do anything except blow water up your ass when you fart in the commode. That was the biggest pile of BS you've laid so far. But, I'm sure you'll try to top that one (and likely succeed in more stupid crap).

WOW! What an insult... a negligible amount of a Mega-Roach. Is that supposed to really mean something? You better go to bed before your parents find you playing on the computer. You don't want to miss the short bus in the morning.

Do you ever have original thoughts that you didn't read in someone else's book? I mean, someone who thinks they know as much as you should write their own book. Until you write your own book with your own, personally-gained-and-proven information you are just a fraud.
Now, what we have is a really simple situation that I will recap in a few, short steps:
1. I called bs on someone else
2. You tried to call bs on me but failed in an epic way because you were wrong and aren't that bright
3. I called bs on your puny attempt to call bs on me
4. You blew the one chance you had not to be an even bigger sacktard today than you were yesterday
5. You're not the boss of me. I also locked my parents in the basement so I can stay up as late as I want, but let's not talk about that.
