Actually, it's true, many businesses deny will not hire smokers ... but the funny thing is that no one caught the typo/joke I put in there. Oh well, my sense of humor is usually really bad anyway. There is legal precedence to deny smokers jobs, many many many jobs, because of the smoking itself. Not to mention it's illegal to smoke anywhere within 20 feet of a window or doorway to any building in downtown ... which means if you're standing still, you have to be in the middle of the street to avoid breaking the law. Yeah, smoking here is a boogeyman. So meh, legalized pot actually opens the way to make it harder to prosecute us tobacco smokers, win-win.

The health care insurance companies are pushing the no smoker hiring practice by increasing the rates to companies that allow smoking. The insurance companies usually pay for a yearly physical in their wellness program and when the bills come in from the doctors to the insurance company, they pick up on the smoker/non smoker info and charge back the company accordingly. In the future with all the information compiled on the effect of smoking and medical costs, the insurance companies may refuse to write coverage for smokers which would make people pay all the bills themselves which everyone knows is expensive. Putting your family's financial future at risk is a large price to pay just to light up.

An even higher price to pay is letting insurance companies dictate private behavior on the employee's own time. We are workers not slaves! Insurance companies have too much power.

<quoted text>No one is making anything complicated. Written workplace rules will remain in place and if you can't follow them, seek employment in an establishment that doesn't pre-test or have random testing and smoke all you want! While you're at it ,be sure to have a designated driver just as a drunk needs or be charged with DUI on the way out for munchies. What's so hard to understand about that? Nothing is complicated
until the dopers, potheads, and stoners make it
that way.

Then you have the absolute right to go out on your own and get a private policy and not be controlled by a group policy. Why not do that and your concerns are nullified! So simple.

The simple and only correct solution is to GET RID OFF all drugs laws on books. What a private employer chooses as his/her laws should still be up to them. If they want to refuse someone to work there that test positive for carrot juice it needs to be in the laws, that's about how serious I feel this is for what it's worth. However, if federal rules were to have no regulations or evidence of affective impairment beyond immediate blaze can be proven, then we are talking about a discrimination issue due to bigotry. To this also belongs corporate drug testing industry, maybe correctional private lobbying and who knows what else? And alcohol the day after is safer than smoking a joint two weeks ago and being "positive" on test.

Finally, the issue of being allowed to eat raw organic and uncontrolled hemp also stands. Stand by the pot heads, because you know they will stand by you (by not standing around you and minding their own business, something to learn others) when your government want to make you eat some more synthetic drool. We already having the FDA trying to strong arm regulations upon herbal supplements. Time to wake up soon I think!

You are correct. I personally this is a very poorly attended issue with affordable care act. While the main rationale of ACA (get more people health insurance), it also will lead to more corporate and machinery style healthcare, especially since there will not be universal coverage. No, I am not in favor of that, but this is one of the issues where I think those in favor of universal and those of us against ALL organized mega corporatized slavery of employees and workers may agree? I am as libertarian as they come. My sense of charity and compassion is my own and on par with my peers. I do not want to see thousands in the streets dying either, like liberals allude to, but I DO think there is a place for private solutions here. However, it long time ago stopped being about health and merely became one about corporates, government-medical complex and the destruction of another entity of individualism. Who cares if we destroy another sets of liberties in the process? Let the share holders make the decision about ethics, not the healthcare itself...

For one, it tastes better. Second, you don't actually inhale. Cigars are the same reasons.

Funny story, or for me, as a kid in the 80s I used to take cigars into the kitchen where I worked. The manager and other workers would enjoy one as well. One day, I offered a another co-worker, black guy, one of my cigars. He was busy in another part of the kitchen when he came running up to me looking as green as you can be and looking ready to empty his stomach. He asked how I could smoke these 'things?' Trying to keep from laughing I had to tell him not to inhale them.

Employers, private or government, have a right to a drug free environment. It is your choice to work for them so you accept the rules. WA State is no different than service members living in Europe and travel to Amsterdam for a weekend get away. The traveling to a drug free environment does not exclude those members from following the rules.

You are not alone. I arrived school early and parked at the far end of the lot, away from most cars, to smoke my pipe. A gentleman approached his vehicle, across the aisle, and started looking at me with a 'weird' look. I apologized and stated I parked away from other vehicles not to offend. He wasn't offended at all but was completely satisfied about the aroma. He, being part native American, was carving his own pipe from scratch and was loving the smell.
