This should be a lesson to all police officers in this state. You do carry a big stick and that is because we have granted you a big stick. But do not abuse your power and do not misuse our funds.

Honestly, I believe that this could be the tip of the iceberg. You could be throwing away your tax dollar to fund misuse of police authority and power.

The report said that troopers may have abused their gas cards to fill their tanks far beyond what was needed for their police duties. It reminds me of when you rent a car and you are supposed to return the tank half full. How do you figure out exactly what to put back in? It's very tough to judge. As it is they are driving gas hungry cruisers, running them for HOURS on the sides of highways and at traffic details, and we expect them to figure out what amount of gas is used when?

Come on.

There are probably hundreds of thousands of dollars of tax payer money wasted and we dont even have a good system to figure out where its all gone.

And let me tell you, I have a friend whose was harrassed endlessly by a State Cop who finally figgured out that he was out of line and out of his jurisdiction and so he abused his position and seriously harmed this friend. And he can't do crap, cause it's his word against the trooper. All that was accomplished was that it was proved to my friend that Mass State Police WILL abuse their power. So, he goes to the grave with that knowledge. As do his friends. Hopefully, we will probe this important state agency and hold them accountable for doing the work of Massachusetts fairly, honestly and with respect for our money.

we are in a major economic crisis.
thousands have lost their jobs!
wall street is falling apart at the seams and 401Ks are not going to support people who need to retire soon.

And cops are sitting on fancy pensions, riding around in volvos and lexuses and brand new late model cars grabbing extra detail work (yes....there are still TONS of them out there!)

and now the state police is skimming money and believe me this is just the tip of the iceberg,

the time has come. lets clean house Massachusetts!! We have hundreds of thousands of dollars to save and we should check under all of the hoods....and I mean that boths way Mr State "Troopahs".

time to get honest!

I was wondering if any further information had been uncovered regarding the misuse of state funds by state police.

The state is looking at a massive deficit this year and it would behoove us to insure that this issue does not fall through the cracks.

I believe that governor Patrick, along with the support from a rights based Federal Government, will ensure that this and other allegations of misconduct by the Mass State Police will be uncovered.

It is time for us to have safe cities and towns and respect for people's rights. The Bush admin, powering these cops with too much testosterone and ego, has resulted in a more dangerous and violent USA then we had 10 years ago.

Did you hear about the poor woman who was beheaded in a campus cafe? I am disgusted by what our country has turned into and embarrassed that Massachusetts has been allowed to be part of it (though fortunately, we voted against it)

Simple solution. Since cops seem to take free liberty to post the name of anyone on topix, even before they have been convicted of anything, why not post the names of cops here who are accused of anything. So long as you tell the truth, they were just accused, you are exercising your free speech. Then again, when cops are accused of wrongdoing, they do 'internal investigations' so that if they are found to be innocent, their careers aren't damaged.

Huh? What about the rest of the fr_cking world? Why don't they get internal investigations?

Are you saying that my tax money is being wasted by State Police? Please give me more information cause seriously I am working very hard to support my kids (I lose my husband to cancer last year) and I will not tolerate any good-old-boy network protecting its own while I pay taxes in this state.

Someone please help!

Of course.
All cops are corrupt.
They'll just bury the news with so much enforcin that they're doing, that they bet you'll just forget.
Whose got the time. Just let em do their jobs!
Until its you who ends up the short end somehow.
Maybe Gov Pat will take it upon himself one of these fine days to see what's really up with some of the local outfits.
And the staties as well.

If you remember, the first thing the Governor did after being elected was to have the State buy him a brand new fancy Cadillac Escalade, with red lights and siren, after loud taxpayer howling, and negative media coverage, he sent it back, but this is the guy we are trusting for fiscal responsibility!!!

We need a citizen watchdog group to monitor the state spending. None of the state people, all the way up to the Governor, none of them are to be trusted.

I dont really care if Gov has an Escalade. I like him and if he needs it, heis under the camera all the time so he will have tojustify it.

Cops running rackets behind the scenes.

Thats our problem. A friend of mine was harassed by cops and did some digging and let me tell you its one big good ole boy network and they will
all cover for each other.

You know when you work on your house and you take off a board and you find a huge nest of termites? Uncover some mass cops and you will not believe whats under the hood.

Thank you mr bush for giving them the right to take our rights away and then for making sure they cant be exposed.

THANKS!

I just read over the weekend that Massachusetts will be setting up a new agency to investigate fraud and corruption within Town and City Government. The thinking is that the credibility of our Town and City Government is being dragged down by some people who are using their positions for their personal gains illegally.

I am glad to hear of this new agency; and it ties in nicely with the new era of transparency that our President is pushing.

However, I fear that the Town, City and State police within Massachusetts will not be able to be investigated by this new agency. However, they should all be probed for wrongdoing as well, when the circumstances call for it.

Here are a few great examples:

There was $80,000.00 worth of marajuana stolen from a locked up police evidence room at the Dracut Massachusetts PD a few years back. The statute of limitations is fast running out on procecuting whoever is responsible. Certainly, without the details being known at this time, no one can say 100% that a cop or more than one cop is responsible. However, this sure looks like a case were the police themselves are unwilling to properly investigate this crime, and that is just plain wrong. If a cop or more than one cop is actually responsible for this crime, not only is he dishonest; he is a criminal as well. Someone should not only lose their job over this one; they should be in jail.

There was recently a case from Hamilton Massachusetts where 4 or 5 cops lied about receiving EMT training to increase their pay. They were required to spend about 6 hours once a year being properly trained. However they couldn't be bothered giving up one day a year of their time to do things the right way. So, they falsified the training records. These cops were running this scam for a few years; until one of their own ratted them out. All of the cops involved should be fired and they should have to pay back any of the money that received for completing the EMT training; the training that the never received!

We recently had the case of the Mass State Troopers using State issued credit cards to fill up their personal gas tanks, At the least; this is grossly dishonest. However, it is more than that. It is theft. These instances of theft should have resulted in charges of larceny and falsifying records being brought against these crooks. All of these crooks should have all been fired to maintain credibilty for the Mass State Police.

A few years back a cop from Quincy lied about going to the Coast Guard reserves in order to get additional paid time off. It was discovered that he took about 64 additional paid days off over a 2 1/2 year time. This guy should have been prosecuted for grand larceny and falsifying records. He should have been required to pay back all of the money that he pretty much stole.

There was recently a case where a cop lied about going to canine training with his police dog. This is another case where a cop lied in order to receive additional paid days off.

Folks, these are all recent cases right here in Massachusetts. The police are currently policing themselves; and they are clearly not in a position to do so. It is wrong and it has to stop.

Theft and corruption by the police in Massachusetts should be investigated by the new agency that is currently being formed. I'll say it again; the police should not be allowed to continue to investigate their own. That system is grossly flawed!

consider the typical cop: Irish, mediocre high school graduate, minimal brains in his head. These are the same guys who are "organized" into a quasi-Mafia to hold hostage any road work without one or several of them getting paid big money to look at guys working and wave the cars by. Whatever happened to getting Civilian flag wavers? Cops (not all, but probably a majority) are just as crooked as the organized crime people. Sometimes one also has to wonder how many people they "set up" with phony evidence to make their dept look good... Nah, they would never do that...they have morals!

How many jobs do you know, wherem illegal misconduct is swept under the rug and those accused are PROTECTED FROM EMBARRASSMENT and are just given DESK DUTY unless CONVICTED of a crime.

That's what your TAX FUNDED GOVERNMENT is allowing to occur in the case of local police AND the Mass State Police.

YOUR money going so that your rights can be ignored and your government can get away with abuse.

I know of no jobs like that. Can you tell me what the cost is of this abuse and what is being done about it?

The State Police will do everything that they can to hide the cost Wendy. Not only will your tax dollars pay for their abuse, it will pay to cover it up. Isn't that fair?

I was driving down I-395 recently coming up to the Mass Pike and there was a crew repairing a road sign. There were THREE Massachusetts State Police cruisers working that detail. All were burning gas with lights flashing. Anyone who drives that road knows that it is not exactly a heavily travelled lane (in fact it was after 9pm). Why the hell did they need three cruisers out there?

There is no question that the Troopers are bearing the brunt of the image crisis facing the Massachusetts State Police, as abuse and misuse of power are uncovered as well as ridiculous wastes of your tax money to fund everything from details to high paying overtime jobs. However the Massachusetts State Police has many divisions that never make it onto the radar screen. For example, there are only two homicide divisions in Massachusetts, one for Boston and one for Springfield. That means that all other homicides are investigated by the Massachusetts State Police. Certainly there are other divisions as well. Do you even know who works for the Massachusetts State Police unless they are waering a Trooper uniform? You as a taxpayer have the right to know who else is working for the State Police, what they are doing and how much it is costing you. I would imagine that these guys have access to alot of informaton and probably do whatever they want, unseen by the untrained eye.
