Rightfully so. This site is a SUPER FUND site and was the main disposal site for all of Monsanto's plants that sent their hazardous waste to. Just imagine all that waste being dug up and trucked out through Everett and surrounding cities to who knows where?

When a school or industrial place has a spill it's evacuated and hazmatt teams called in. What about this site where there is much more chance for spillage.

Who said they would be trucking anything out have you seen the plans? What got trucked out when Costco was built?

Yes, the land needs to be cleaned out. Good news really. This toxic site has been around for years and it is great that someone is finally going to clean it up. Better than the dump their mayor, DiMaria, wanted to put there. A site this dirty will be overseen by the EPA.

Wasn't the Assembly Square the site of an industrial company. Probably had toxins in the soil there the were cleaned up. We're the surrounding cities notified so they could challenge it? I think not. This is all grandstanding by the surrounding cities to get a cash benefit for their cities. Give Everett a chance to have a cleaned up waterfront area. Hopefully the winner of this year's election will be able to deal in an intelligent manner with all the issues that could arise.

Apparently you can build a one-story building on contaminated soil (like all the stores in the Gateway mall) but you cannot build anything higher without taking out the soil. Obviously they will have to remove all the soil for the casino/hotel.

Same issue when they built the MWRA pumping station 25 years ago.
PCB laden dirt doubled the cost of the project.

Original dump site refused to take the dirt once it was analyzed.

They were going to burn it (I didn't even know you could burn DIRT)
but it was too dirty for that.

I think New Jersey took it in the end.

I wonder if they've even had this dirt analyzed yet?

Sure...

just slap a "Free Fill" sign on the piles,
and people can fill their gardens & playgrounds in with it...
right?

Train, or barge it, to where?

Tin sailor, the Costco and Gateway Mall is a site that is caped off, meaning it is isolated from the buildings that sit on top and as some one stated it is limited to a one story structure. If you notice the layout of the mall there is no main concourse joining the buildings like Square one and lots of other malls and I believe that's incase of a leak thru where sections can be closed off without shutting down the whole mall. The multistory requires the footings go down to bed rock which will disturb the hazardous waste. Yes the Assembly Mall was an industrial building but not the chemical disposal complex that was the sole purpose of the Monsanto property.
This site is a Super Fund site, which means that it is so contaminated and costly to clean-up that the Feds have it on a list of other sites and most just sit left alone till there is funding to do so.

Wow! Steve is Gonna Wynn may want to call 911. Sounds like he is going to have a stroke.

Doubt Steve is Gonna Wynn could afford to move to Somerville. Unless he is on public assistance.

Seems to be the case in this town as of late.

Calling someone a dope seems appropriate here considering someone was just trying to bring up a point.

WOW is 'someone' upset !!! No need for that language either. It does sound like he is going to have a stroke over this discussion....

Time will tell if we get a casino or not.....It's really out of the citizens hands now after the positive voting for it....

Traffic in that area is a huge problem and is going to get worse that's a given....

This 'someone' sounds like a person who has road rage quite a bit....

Your mother should call 911. And I unlike you could BUY a house in Somerville tomorrow but I actually like and care about this city. You will not see me blowing the mayor of a rival city like you idiots do. I find it offensive that a mayor in another community that has received millions upon millions of dollars in federal aid to build up their city has the balls to start bitching about the City of Everett wanting something to. Why didn't you idiots complain about the sludge plant that boston put on our doorstep? Curtatone and Manino should both go jump of the tobin.

Keeping Everett classy!

F bombs and oral sex.

This is result of a legitimate discussion about a site that is loaded with chemical waste.

I guess you vote Democrat. You get pissed off when people pull out the big guns..........facts.

Liberals are tolerent until your opionion doesn't agree with theirs.

Steve is Gonna Wynn should move to Somerville. You'd fit it perfectly. Do us all a favor and bring the junkies, low lifes and dregs of society that live in Everett with you.

You won't be missed.
