The school system here is a joke, pure and simple. The teachers and administrators seem to care more about what the kids are wearing than what they're learning. The dress code is a joke, too. What are they trying to do, raise a bunch of lockstep marching robots? Stripping the kids of their individuality is the first step for that goal.

Meigs North was a great school. The middle school and high school, not so much.

I have to say that I am impressed with Meigs South Elementary and the teaching staff there. My parents are employed by the Hamilton County school system and let me tell you, it's alot worse than our schools here. Please remember that it is our responsibility as parents to ensure that our children are receiving a good education. That means doing our part at home and working together with our teachers to educate our children. School is not free daycare, where you drop your children off and forget about them. If our children are not ready for their tests, then we should share the blame. I intend to be 100% involved in my child's education and school and I encourage all parents to do the same. That is how you ensure that your child receives the education he or she deserves.

Uninvolved parents are a big problem, however I'd say that accounts more for behavioral issues than academic.

While I'm sure it affects the grades, I'd say it has more to do with students just not doing their work rather than not understanding the material.

I think the name thing is not as much of a problem as it was when I was in school. I feel like Harmon did a lot of good things for the high school (or at least, a lot of the problems went away when he showed up). It's probably still a problem, but not to the degree that it was.

I just wish the quality of the teachers wasn't abysmal.

Talk to some of our kids who have gone off to college. If they're going for anything that isn't dead easy, they'll tell you that there's a night and day difference between university and MCHS.

None of my math/science in high school even came close to preparing me for college. Nearly everyone else was way ahead of me at the beginning. It was depressing.

meigs county schools have very little to offer the kids compared to other schools in the surrounding counties. as for the "dress code" i think that the teachers should have to follow the same code i went to pick my oldest child up at the middle school and there was a teacher in a low cut shirt and pretty much a mini skirt... how is that setting an example for the kids?! even cleveland slacked off on the dress code and will let the kids wear shorts as long as they were knee length and not cargos. and as for them having to pay to wear denim what about the families that are poor and cant afford it... thats not fair to them.

You're exactly right on the fact that there is little offered. Also, what IS offered is below par.

Chemistry there was a joke. Pre-calculus there was a joke. Do they even have any real computer classes yet?

I'm not familiar with the kids paying to wear denim. What's the story on that?

they have certain days that are so-called fund raisers for the school and other org. that they have to pay $1 to get to wear denim but they still have to wear the dress code shirts and belts. I would like to know where all the moneys go from all the "fund raisers" they have during the year. when they were in head start we always knew where the money went but once they got into grade school it seems to disappear.... come to think of it i havent seen any of my kids bring home a new school book in years and my oldest is in middle school and the last new book he had seems to be back near 3rd grade. i could be wrong but it just seems that way

"Uninvolved parents"? Try "uneducated parents" because that would be a more accurate description. A quick perusal of this forum should open your eyes to that fact. Adult illiteracy runs amok in this county.

3rd graders have a better grip on spelling and grammar than some of the adults who post on this forum. Do you *really* want parents like those being involved in their child's education??

I think the school system is marginal at best. While I have no evidence of cheating on TCAP tests, that is alarming and should be looked into.

As far as the dress code, I don't see anything wrong with having a "code", but the standard of having to wear slacks and polo shirts is absurd. We are a rural community, with many children having the responsiblity of doing work afterwords.

Someone mentioned GPS, and McCaullie as examples of clean campus' because of dress code, but the fact is they are PRIVATE SCHOOLS! The government shouldn't be telling anyone what to wear, unless they work for the government, and that should be a rare occurance. People need to read the constitution specifically the tenth ammendment. It outlaws things like the Federal Dept. of Education.

A main key to succesful classroom work that is often overlooked is minimal distractions. The intercoms need to be shut off, but if you go to any of the schools you will see they are not.

The school board is basically becomming a mob, and IMO there needs to be a change.

Some of you may not realize that the 3-5 graders had a practice test that was given before the real test. Are you sure your child wasn't talking about a practice test? If you really think that cheating was going on did you go to your principal or are you just complaining and spreading something that you're not 100% sure about? Take your children to a different school if you think Meigs is so bad. Most people that come to Meigs or leave Meigs tell the schools that they love Meigs. Mr. Danner at the High School is a top notch math teacher, but most parents complain that he's too hard. So it's either too easy or too hard, depending on who you talk to. Do you meet your child's teacher or teachers. Most parents don't. You as a parent have as much say in your child's education as the school system. It takes involvement and time.

Well I would have to say that our school is doing fair to good, I have a 3rd Grader that reads on 7.8 Level and daughters that are lower grades that are advancing well. I went to Meigs my whole school career and I feel that I did recieve the best that could have been done, it has taken me several years to catch up but I am working on my Masters Degree now. I personally am sending my children to McCallie and Baylor or GPS when they reach the 6th grade, to ensure that they recieve a quality education, to prepare them better for life and to achieve thier goals. But I would have to say that there are several teacher at the south school that are great teachers, but the rest could not teach a cow to eat hay..... ....Also I have been to north school and WHY do they treat the children like they are in prison, these are small children not grown men do not talk to these children with such a mean or harsh tone, if these kids get on your nerves or you think your job sucks get out......Mrs Trudy rules the school like a dictator...

I have read these comments, I have worked in the school sysem for years in a lot of different places in Meigs County System: 1) Yes the teachers do tell the kids the answers on TCAP 2) The high school does not teach the kids anything. 3) Mr. Danner is the only teacher & Mr. Jennings they care about there kids. 4)The custondians sit at the high school & get pd. for it while some of them do all the work. 5)The kids will tell you some of the stories there teachers will tell them like how they have been raped by some men that beat him up.... Check with your kids it is MR.L. He says he will fly to somewhere to go to lunch, but they ask for help with math and he tells them to figure it out.More to come..

Check with the men who work all the schools. The ones that are to repair the plumbing & everything. How much of the things do they take home with them & the county is paying for it... How many times have they done work for school members & the school system pays for it... Talk about the money raised Where is it going for sure... Maybe they need more than one person taking care of the money since the one collecting it has no job but lives like a queen ????? Where does the money go for the days you pay to wear jeans??? No one ever knows?? How about the books they sell at the schools who is gettin the free stuff they offer the staff ??? People you need to get your head out of the sand.. You know what is going on if your child is at the school come to a meeting and tell the board.. Lets see what happens NOTHING

What free stuff for the staff are you talking about? I work for the school system and I don't receive free stuff. If the school sells T-shirts I buy one. I pay for my breakfast and lunch and the breakfast and lunch for my child. And as for the men who work for the school system fixing things... I would love to have some of my home improvements paid for. Unfortunately I do them myself. I too wonder sometimes where all the fundraiser money goes. I do know that some blue jean money went in support of March of Dimes. Meigs North also tried to charge money for denim to help the 4th and 5th grade students pay for their Dollywood tickets for the end of the school year.

this is a sore subject... most of these comments are correct.. i dont have anything against dress code. grab a dress code sheet. stand in front of the school. after reading the dress code watch the children walking in and out of the middle and high school. over half of them do not wear proper pants or tops. and the girls wear those low shirts and hip hugger pants. no no. or tight fitting color DEMIN. and believe or not. some of them have been written up for as little as the back of their shirt being untucked. Hell some of them shirts are not long enough to tuck. no kidding. Now can you tell me where the education is in that!!!! the big man needs to take a closer look at his schools. drugs. omg thats another one. but another time. and remind me to tell you how some kids can bring up their grade if they sell fun raisers.i was floored.

Today, my child brought home a note about the AR field trip for Meigs South kindergarten and 1st grade. At the bottom of the note, it states that parent Chaperones are not needed. Since when do our small children get on buses and go to Chattanooga with only 13 adults? Why are parents not welcome? We pay our own way and provide our own transportation. Does this same rule apply for field trips from Meigs North? I am not happy with this decision and would also like to know who made it. If we are expected to participate in all of these fundraisers then we should be allowed to go on ALL trips with our children. I'm not sure if my child will be participating, and that is unfair because we worked VERY hard to get all of the points needed for the year.

Is Ms. Trudy retiring this year? I heard that she was, but that could just be a rumor.
