Review: Dearborn Animal Hospital - Callie Mizell DVM

BIG FAN of Dr Mizell

Atlanta, GA

I'm new to Decatur and had heard great things about Dearborn and especially about Dr. Mizell, so I gave them a try. While I did have to wait a while to see the vet my first visit (I didn't have an appointment - just walked in), the front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. They were really, really busy - the phones were ringing constantly, customers (and even non-customers) kept coming in asking questions that they really should have seen a vet about but obviously didn't want to spend the time waiting for a vet or pay the money to see one so they were pushing the receptionists to the brink. But both receptionists (a mid-20s blond girl and a 60-ish lady with short grey hair) kept a good attitude and did their best to keep everyone happy, joking with us and with each other. Because I specifically wanted to wait to see Dr. Mizell, I did have to wait a little longer than I would have, but the blond receptionist actually periodically gave me updates on how much longer it might be!
Once I finally did get to meet Callie Mizell, it was clear why my friends were so determined that I see her - she's amazing. My dog has been dealing with an ongoing issue that really had his "home" vet(the vet we used before we moved here) stumped. My husband and I had completely given up on finding an absolute diagnosis or cure, and our old vet had just been treating the symptoms - for YEARS! We'd come to Dr. Mizell expecting more of the same - just treating symptoms as they appeared but with no hope of finding the underlying illness.
Anyway, one visit with Dr. Mizell and we knew that she'd get to the bottom of our baby's condition - and she did! It took some labwork (but not that much and it wasn't even that expensive) and she eventually referred us to a specialist to confirm her suspicion, but she did actually figure it out! The woman is brilliant.
She's pretty young - definitely the youngest at Dearborn (from what I've seen), but she is exceptionally knowledgeable and truly passionate about what she does. As a younger vet, I think she is also more conscious of keeping up with the latest veterinary news, products, and treatments. And if she doesn't know the answer to a question, SHE'LL ACTUALLY TELL YOU that she doesn't know and then she finds out for you! Instead of most vets I've encountered, who pretend to know the answer and then give you vague, kind of unclear advice regarding something they know nothing about!(Sound familiar?)
Bottom line: While I'm sure all the vets are great, Dr. Mizell is a gem. I consider myself lucky to have discovered her. And you really just can't beat Dearborn's prices. Of course, one of the reasons for the low cost is apparent when you deal with the front office - they're grossly understaffed. While sitting in the waiting room I always just sit and watch the parade of clients marching in just looking for a fight - and yet the receptionists I've seen (especially the young-ish blond one) go WAY out of their way to accommodate even the nastiest clients, despite sometimes being really verbally abused.
So next time you're sitting in their waiting room and it's been 45 minutes and you're getting impatient, just remember that you're paying about 1/4 of what you'd pay somewhere else, and that reduction in cost has to come from somewhere. So maybe it's not the best-decorated animal hospital, and is sometimes WAY understaffed, and maybe the forms and paperwork they use could be a little more professional and up-to-date. I think that having a vet who you can trust completely is worth putting up with a little inconvenience.
