Hurray for Rand, who had the GUTs to stand up to Obama, and his band of merry men!

"After years in the shadows, the administration’s secret drone program burst into very public view Wednesday with lawmakers grilling the attorney general over legal justification for targeted killings and Sen. Rand Paul launching an old-style one-man filibuster to demand answers from President Obama.

The Kentucky Republican held the floor for almost 13 hours, effectively blocking a vote on the nomination of John O. Brennan, whom Mr. Obama has tapped to be CIA director. He said he would relent only if the administration publicly vowed not to target Americans on U.S. soil.

“This is a long, drawn-out day, but it’s to try to get some answers,” Mr. Paul said after he crossed the eight-hour mark late Wednesday evening.“It’s to try to shame the president into doing the right thing.”

Democrats, who control the chamber, were forced to delay a vote on the Brennan nomination until at least Thursday, and it could go into the weekend, depending on what other blockades Republicans erect.

At issue is the administration’s argument that

>>>>>>> >>>>>>> >>>>it can kill those it suspects have ties to terrorism, including U.S. citizens<<<<< <<<<<<< <<<< without having to put them on trial.

The fulcrum of the debate is the drone program, started under President George W. Bush and expanded by Mr. Obama, which many lawmakers said gives too much power to the executive branch — and raises tricky questions about whether drones could be used to execute Americans in the United States.

The administration has only recently acknowledged the drone program and says it is seeking a public debate in order to find common ground on what Americans are ready to accept.

“I think there is going to be a greater effort at the transparency. A number of steps are going to be taken. I expect you will hear the president speaking about this,” Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. told the SenateJudiciary Committee on Wednesday morning. "

That was great, wasn't it?
But think about this. If Drones are ever deployed over America, it will make some fairly fun target practice.
And it will generate some interest in fabricating a weapon to take one down.
American males have enough access to machine shops to fabricate one from scratch.
I can see the articles in the supermarket magazines now. Popular Science Exclusive: How To Take Down A Drone.

Ahhhhhhh, Rand gets some "backup"!

GOOD!!

" Sen. Rand Paul’s filibuster Wednesday to bring attention to drone strikes turned into a committee affair, with a dozen other GOP senators coming to the chamber floor to help carry the speaking load by asking long-winded questions, giving Mr. Paul a chance to rest his voice and stretch his legs as the others spoke.

Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah did the most to help, with Mr. Cruz at one point holding the floor for a single question that lasted 50 minutes.

Late in the evening Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus even issued an all-hands alert for help:“Attention all Republican US Senators -> Please go to the floor and help out.”

In addition to Mr. Cruz and Mr. Lee, others who showed up and spoke included Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, John Cornyn of Texas, John Barrasso of Wyoming, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Tim Scott of South Carolina, Jeff Flake of Arizona, John Thune of South Dakotaand Mitch McConnell, the GOP floor leader, who made a late-night appearance to congratulate his fellow Kentuckian.

Most of those senators were newcomers, elected in 2010 or 2012.

While the filibuster, televised live on TV, captured the attention of conservatives and libertarians, for much of official Washington the bigger event was on the other side of town, where President Obama held an old-style closed-door dinner with Republican lawmakers, including Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

At least three senators even did double-duty, attending the dinner and helping out Mr. Paul: Mr. Toomey, who was one of those, went from the Senate over to the dinner and back to the Senate floor to help Mr. Paul out again.

Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, also came to the floor to help out at one point. Mr. Wyden and Mr. Paul are ideological allies on the issue of seeking more information on drone strikes.
