Beneath the expressions of grief, sorrow and disbelief over the Connecticut school massacre lies an uneasy truth in Washington: over the last few years the Obama administration and Congress quietly let federal funding for several key school security programs lapse in the name of budget savings.

Government officials told the Washington Guardian on Friday night that two Justice Department programs that had provided more than $200 million to schools for training, security equipment and police resources over the last decade weren't renewed in 2011 and 2012, and that a separate program that provided $800 million to put police officers inside the schools was ended a few years earlier.

Meanwhile, the administration eliminated funding in 2011-12 for a separate Education Department program that gave money to schools to prepare for mass tragedies, the officials said.

Where is the liberal outrage? Where is the liberal suspicion about powerful, unchecked governments? Where is the liberal unflinching devotion to individual liberty?

Do you remember the liberal outrage over the huge government list to keep people deemed dangerous from flying on airplanes?

The problems with people being killed by guns are the people not the guns. More people were killed by knives than assault type rifles last year. Attack the real problem like NY did. NY police would search people on the street who appeared to be the type who might be a gangster and had no permit. The thugs became scared of getting arrested when waling around with illegal guns and no permit. Ask to see a person's concealed weapons permit, and after they show it thank them and then leave them alone.

It seems to me how we deal with mental health is the real issue. Since long term residential facilities have been closed, the mentally ill are homeless, in jail, or at home with families ill equipped to handle them.
