Thank you Robin!! This is the biggest problem, the HORSE ranchers, backyard breeders, all the irresponsible people that have an uncut horse they believe to be the most awesome, well bred stallion ever...in the eyes of the beholder only.
Breeding horses, like puppy mills, is cheap, does not require a commitment to the animal...20-30 acres of grass, a little water, throw a stallion out in the field with a couple dozen mares and double your herd in one year. Then they can't understand why they can't sell all those unhandled colts they round up in the spring. Most people looking for a horse want a dog gentle broke horse for $2000 they can ride every weekend, not a 9 month old weanling requiring feed for 2-3 years and then another $3000 to break and train.
AQHA is the worst offender, in 2011 alone they had 75,225 new U.S. registrations. The organization has taken a stance that the AQHA as a whole is for slaughter; although, it appears most "members" are against slaughter and for responsible breeding and training programs. 70-75% of the horses sent to slaughter are quarter horses.
U.S. slaughter will only increase the number of horses bred in America. Slaughter proponents are talking about their own breeding facilities attached to the slaughter plants. Europe does not want our drug tainted horses, as of July 31, 2013 they will not accept US horses unless they have a passport from birth http://ec.europa.eu/food/food/chemicalsafety/... ergo breeding facilities or criminal behavior requiring false documentation.

Sorry to tell you but there is alot more than 1% of horses sent to slaughter. Horses are shipped daily into Canada and Mexico and bring a good price for these killbuyers that makes a living by buying and taking free horses from unknowing people. To eliminate "Junk HOrses" you have to educate the public and regulate breeding. Not to mention that MAN is the guilty one of messing up so many horses by trying to train them by beating and forcing these animals to perform according to the human handling them, there is no such thing as a JUNK HORSE it's the person handling the horse. There are more young pure bred registered horses going to slaughter they (slaughter houses) prefer not to take the weak, thin, sick or blind horses it is the young thick ones they prefer to kill. Educate yourself people SLAUGHTER IS NOT THE ANSWER.
I totally agree!! Those of us who are able do what we can to save and value so called "junk horses" who didn't ask to be put on this earth. Slaughter has never been and will never be the answer!!

As a native Georgian, I hope the citizens of Georgia will stop any horse slaughter plant from opening in Georgia. Rep. Jack King should never have voted for this option. Not only is horse slaughter inhumane, it will never, ever solve the "unwanted horse" problem in this country. Only responsibility of breeders such as the American Quarter Horse Association and the Racing Industry solve this. We have too many horses because we have too many greedy unscrupulous breeders.
Also, for anyone who is thinking of supporting this, you want want to check into what horse slaughter plants does to property prices. Paula Bacon lived horse slaughter. She was Mayor in Kauffman, TX. Is this what you want?
http://www.animallawcoalition.com/horse-slaug...
I have called Jack Kingston, talked to his aide, sent him e-mails. He doesn't respond because I'm not in his district. I have learned that he doesn't own horses...not a surprise. I see him from time to time on Bill Maher's show on HBO. Bill Maher has said that he considers him a friend and I'm wondering what he thinks of Jack Kingston's idea that slaughtering horses will end their suffering?
The idea of a horse slaughter plant in my state makes me sick. I've heard what the people of Kaufman, TX had to say about the horse slaughter plant in their town, the criminal activity that accompanied it, the stench and the environmental devastation it had. What idiot would want this for their constituents? Not to mention that we don't even consume horse meat in this country and would be paying tax dollars for USDA inspections of horse meat for an overseas industry...an overseas industry that is becoming increasingly aware of the contaminants in American horse meat. No. Hell, no. This is not what anyone wants.

I agree with you all but the stats. There are approximately 10 million horses in the U.S. Approximately 100,000 are transported to Mexico or Canada from the U.S. each year for slaughter (currently.) That's 1%...
Actually for 2012 the number sent to slaughter will be approximately 175,000, nearly double the 100,000 estimate stated.

Some of the comments here indicate a total lack of knowledge regarding the topic. Why some people shoot off their mouths about topics they have virtually no knowledge and experience with is a prime example of human arrogance and ignorance. Attention seekers perhaps?

Why are we as a predominately Christian nation allowing animals to be brutalized in some barbaric way just because a small minority wish it to be done and why are we paying extra to have our food and non-food items deemed "kosher."
It's my understanding that Jewish people do not eat horsemeat, so that comment isn't entirely relevant.

I don't know about all of that made up stuff you're squawking about, but we still don't need to throw another animal into the food chain. Horse slaughter is torture. We don't eat horses in this country. 80% of the people in this country oppose horse slaughter. Horse meat is loaded with so many contaminants that we don't even use it in dog food. Europeans are becoming increasingly aware of the toxicity of American horse meat....so...What's your point again??

Advocating for an inhumane and toxic "industry" that preys on valuable horses in the U.S. does not provide a justified alternative for ignorant men's breeding... Let the Blackfeet shoot their own horses in the head if that's what they want to do. The elders of their tribe turn over in their graves to see horses meet their end in this horrific way. Plus, it has been proven the meat is toxic and causes Cancer and other digestive diseases when consumed regularly.
Many voters in Montana got approval for slaughter houses in that state after so many horses shipped from Montana were found to be to toxic for human consumption. Many of the Montana horses shipped to Canada are from the Browning area which is close to the Canadian border. One of the largest holding areas for equine slaughter is in Shelby, Mt which is located near Browning, Mt. I'm not sure if they have a working equine slaughter house in Shelby at this time or if they are still shipping them to Canada from there. I do know the democrats have passed a bill to enable them to slaughter horses in that state. BTW, Browning is the headquarters of the Blackfeet Nation.

NO!There is no legal equine slaughter facility in the US. No funds are allocated for USDA inspections and no applications are approved. EU regulations will soon ban import of toxic N. American horse flesh into Europe, so the market is falling apart. Stop the breeding, stop the slaughter.

There is a black market for horse meat. They are slaughtering them in backyards in Florida and (reportedly) in the wee hours of the morning at established slaughterhouses across the country. USDA could be "inspecting" like they do in Texas, where the shipment arrives from Mexico and they slap the inspection stickers on before its shipped off to Europe. This whole "industry" is about as accountable as the labor unions in Chicago 80 years ago... How do we know if the Blackfeet are slaughtering on their land? If they are in business with Canadian companies---does the USDA even have to 'inspect' the meat? What if its shipping to Japan? They don't have the same standards as the EU.

Humans have too many chemicals and drugs in their bodies. Several years back a local restaurant had Emu,beefaloe, and horsemeat burgers for a short time. The Emu and beefaloe was ok but the horsemeat was a bit lean and chewey.

No TO HORSESLAUGHTER!!!!!! THE GOVERNMENT IS REALLY ABOUT TO PISS ALOT OF PEOPLE OFF, WITH THEIR NOT THINKING, BEFORE DOING, WAYS. USE COMMON SENSE,
AND LEARN THE CAUSE, AND ENFORCE LAWS TO FIX THAT.

UH DUH--LIKE LEGAL BREEDING FACILITIES, MAYBE ONLY A CERTIN AMOUNT OF FOALS PER YEAR ALLOWED. NON-REGISTERED HORSES ONLY A CERTIN AMOUNT PER YEAR.

YOU CAN ALWAYS MAKE MONEY OFF OF ILLEGAL FINES,
TAXES ON THOSE WHO MAKE MONEY IN THE BUSINESS.

IF YOU FINED PEOPLE FOR ABUSE, YOU COULD MAKE ALOT OF MONEY, BETTER YET JUST MAKE THEM WORK IF THEY CANNOT PAY, OR GO TO JAIL.

MAKE THEM DO THE JOBS THAT THE TAXPAYERS ARE PAYING FOR, LIKE WORKING ON THE ROADS, TAKING CARE OF THINGS THAT THEY COULD DO.
