Hello All, Please stop all this negativity,if you have a issue with someone or something either try to fix it or shut up about it.I have been going to Camp Dearborn since 1970 and have been in the tents, cabins and have had a trailer there since 75.I and my extended family always loved the place and still do.They have made great strides there in fixing things up and it is still very enjoyable and my kids love going there. I would also like to recommend that people try the camp for themselves and ignore all these racist and ignorant comments that have appeared on this thread you will not be dissappointed if you decide to camp there and your kids will thank you it. Give it a try it's close to home and reasonably priced and fun to.

1978 was the last time I been there and I still can see the old wood hut on the sand to change your swim trunks . And I can still see the water spout where you could wash your feet off .

I have lots of fond memories from Camp Dearborn in the 60s and 70s.

It does not surprise me that Camp Dearborn has changed a lot since then, since everything else has as well.

It is sad however to see all of the racist comments on this subject. No one will ever gain more understanding and our world will never know peace so long as racism, prejudice and discrimination remain alive and well on this planet.

And by the way, growing up in 100% all white West Dearborn back in the day, I lived around a lot of good people and quite a few not so good people, some of whom gave me and others a lot of grief. But since it was decades ago, every one of those people were white as the driven snow and almost none of them were Jewish or Arab.

I mention this simply to point out that both good and bad people exist in every race, every ethnicity, every religion and every culture on Earth. Singling out one or two races or cultures for the sake of spreading hatred and expressing racism is ignorant on its face, for this reason. Every human is an individual and understanding starts with that simple fact.

Oh, and yes, Camp Dearborn was mostly clean, well run and quite an impressive little piece of property back in the old days. But it was mostly restricted to residents of Dearborn back then. Of course, Mayor Hubbard was in office back then and Dearborn was one of the most racist cities in the whole country back in those days, so the "charm" of both the city itself Camp Dearborn were mostly illusional. The real world outside the city and outside the gates of Camp Dearborn were quite different.

If I am not mistaken, the golf course today covers much or most of the property that used to house the kids' summer camps. If someone who knows whether or not this is true should read this, perhaps you could be so kind as to respond, since I was just curious about this one little fact.

Meanwhile, if this thread should continue, I hope those who participate have gotten the racist hatred and commentary out of their systems. Times change, and maybe sometimes they can even change for the better!

Native Dearbornite - yes, the golf course has taken over Youth Camp. I attended overnight camp at Camp Dearborn and have many fond memories and it is a shame that it is no longer a viable kids camp.

The golf course took the Youth camp,TV 3, Speed boat lake and Sail Boat Lake, the picnic shelters overlooking the lakes, "deadman's Hill" but Camp still has alot to offer and my family and my extended family still enjoy it and still keep our trailer there even after having to move from TV3. I did find our old trailer spot on the golf course and the course is excellent and challenging and the food in the clubhouse is good. Also a very nice friend of Camp Dearborn did get the "ferry boat" and lights running on paddle boat lake again. Thank You for that!!!

We've been going for years and love it. Even now that the kiddos are older, they still want to go so we bought a popup camper last year and have 2011 booked for Camp Dearborn (Memorial/labor days, 4th, Halloween, our anniversary).

What is disappointing is that we just found out today (when we asked via FaceBook) that the 4th of July fireworks and festivities has been cancelled! Hope they notify campers who don't have them on FaceBook. If not, they're going to have an ugly crowd on their hands.

I love Camp Dearborn and still go there. I agree the arabs of Dearborn did make a bad name for it in the late 90s but its much better now. The golf course did take a good bite out of it but if thats what it took to keep camp around I'm happy. I live in Milford now and take my kids there all the time. They Love It. You cant do all the same stuff as we did back in the day but you cant anywhere now. Sliding down the damn... fun but stupid, you can still kayak the Huron river, I do it twice a week. Just like anything else, gotta get used to change. I sometimes wish it was a busy as the old days but its kinda nice to have the place not so crowded. I almost cried when they put new booths in thes spring. I wanted to take an old one home but my wife said "no way".
Give camp another chance, its the people who go there that can make it great again.(sorry not arabs thou) they like to fight and cause trouble too much.

Lived in Milford most of my life, so got to partake of the park at will, and worked there (at the Canteen) in the summer of '68.
I remember lines of traffic backed up all the way to the DQ, and my father directing traffic at the corner of Milford Road and GM Road. It was a regular Sunday gig for the local cops.
Back then you essentially had to be a resident of Dearborn to get in. Not sure what it's like now. I no longer live in the area, but do visit from time to time.
Always wanted to go to Camp Dearborn! My two older sisters had gone a few times in the mid 60's and said it was great! The closest I ever got to Camp Dearborn was Kensington park. Tree- did you ever live in Ecorse?

I just completed a week stay at camp dearborn. I haven't been there for three years for one reason or other. We stopped going due to the ecoli problem with the lakes and the poor housekeeping of the showers and grounds. The middle eastern population was never a problem, drunken slobs and unsupervised teenagers caused me more stress. Our stay this year was great, a little cold, but great. The camp was clean, the goose problem appears to be going away and the facility appeared cleaner. The camp personnel was attentive and seemed to take some pride in their duties. My grand kids (11 & 7) loved it. We are going back next year.
George - thank you for posting this. I came to this site looking for feedback about the campground itself, not to read an on-line hate war. Your post helped me to decide to give the camp a try, despite the hatred that abounds on this forum.

Just came back from Camp Dearborn, and never more they will see me. The place is dirty, staff is nothing but a bunch of kids on their MP3 players driving up and down disrespecting their own speed limit. Bathrooms are filthy, and I saw a staff picking hair out of the showers drain WITHOUT gloves. Good luck in finding a shower that works well. The best one's door does not have a lock, it is totally gone. Had problems of other patrons partying and shouting F and S words until 04:30 AM, and when I went to the office next morning to complain, since nobody picks the phone up after 06:00 PM, the office guy cut me off and told me to call 911 as he walked way. The pool itself is Ok, but you cannot wear your flip-flops on the boiling cement, while the lifeguards do wear them, and the staff is in and out with their tenis shoes on. No umbrellas (meaning no shade) and the chairs are chained to the fence, so you cannot move them to a place where you could protect yourself from the sun (maybe there was a chair stealing event before?). The place is trash, and I will never more take my kids to place where they can hear a 20's somenthing man call you a bitch because you asked them to stop yelling the F word in the lake at 11:00 AM, where you children were building sandcastles 50 feet from them.

The Golf Course ruined the park; it got rid of a large area that was nice to relax in. I don't go there anymore.
