Daytona State College fires over 400 of its brightest

Dear residents of Volusia and Flagler counties,
I do not know if you have been made aware of the true nature of a tragedy that has occurred at Daytona State College (aka Destroying Student Careers), yet tonight I sat through the board meeting where President Kent Sharples and the DSC board members chose to terminate the Digital Media Department and all its programs, faculty, staff and students. This has essentially been a firing of over 400 job opportunities today and thousands more in the future.
This is an absolute insult to you, the community, the current students, faculty, staff, local and national businesses that would have benefited from this department's output of quality designers, advertisers, TV production and producers, and over 20 other visual communication industry future employees.
It is obvious that the DSC board members and DSC administration (President Sharples) did not care to provide any possible solutions to save this department. It is the fault of the same that this program has failed, for it is not due to the economy as they would like everyone to believe, it is not due to the faculty, it is not due to the students it is in fact completely due to the lack of visionary leadership and failure on the part of President Sharples, his administration and the DSC board members to set a path for success for this program.
Visual communication, graphic design, web design, tv production all are segments of the economy that do maintain sustainable and growing employment opportunities no matter the economy. This is partly due to the fact that every organization has a need to market, brand, advertise and communicate (and entertain) to continue to thrive or survive no matter the status of the economy. Yet due to the obvious lack of understanding, intelligence, leadership and care for this program and everyone involved with this program the administration (President Sharples) and the entire board of DSC chose to terminate the futures of several hundred if not thousands of opportunities.
The facts these individuals stated were completely twisted and manufactured to support their lack of courage and leadership.
The lack of respect they showed tonight for the current faculty has many students so broken in spirit and now tainted as to what it means to be a leader. President Sharples, his administration and the DSC board members obvious lack of regard for the students, faculty and local community has proved what is wrong with this country that the leadership has lost touch with what matters most, community and the value of each person (student), and once again they have shown us they are more concerned with their own personal images and wealth.

Be sure and watch the local news for a story on how the board voted Sharples a very LARGE pay increase plus a bonus...

I don't know if you ever actually talked to him (Dr.Sharples) but if you had, you would understand that they tried to attract students through commercials, and they were decent commercials. That might be something to mention. Also, don't criticize just Dr. Sharples, he's not the only one making this decision

Your thinking is too narrow, there are many reasons to a problem and many ways to solve it. Your solution is just different from him. You should expect the worst with an economic crisis like this. You're not happy because they cut the Digital Media Department but that doesn't give you the right to criticizes the one who make the HARD decisions.

This issue is far more expansive than just speaking with Dr. Sharples or the economy and your understanding of the issue.
In fact, many of the faculty have attemprted to speak to Dr. Sharples and he has harshly shut them down. There are many items of evidence to the abuses that Dr. Sharples and his staff have praticed leading to their decision to terminate the Visual Arts Department. Also, the abuses continue since that point in time. SACS/COC are governing bodies that oversee accredited institutions have specific guidelines that DSC is supposed to adhere to, which Dr. Sharples and his administration have neglected and abused.
As for marketing, the Visual Arts Department has NEVER been allowed or invited to self-promote the 7 degree programs that were offered. It is unfortunate given the talent that exists amongst the students and faculty within. If they had been allowed I would project that the so called budget gap would be non-existent.
As of today, although the law states that DSC must teach-out the existing enrolled students with "minimum diruption to their pursuit of course of study" (degree) "and professional career", Dr. Sharples, Dr. Sidor and Mr. Paul are substituting and combining courses in such a way that it has been a complete disruption to the students pursuit of their degrees and professional careers. Dr. Sharples, knowing of his decision to terminate the Visual Arts Department, knowing it would take two years to teach-out in accordance with state law fired the most qualified faculty to perform the teach out. The most senior professor, within the Visual Arts Department, who had been teaching at DSC for 27 years and was just 6 semesters away from receiving his full pension plan, was terminated in public at the Board of Trustees meeting (which I witnessed). It was done without any respect to this professor or to the need at hand.
The list of legal abuses that Dr. Sharples and his administration have done and continue to perform is a list too long for this response. But SACS/COC and legal counsel are receiving the facts.
The worst thing about all this is how the students are being mistreated by Dr. Sharples and his administration. Rather than being focused on their course of study, the classrooms atmosphere is now filled with young folks who are now burdened with trying to figure out how to make sense of the lack of communication, lack of care for students pursuit of their course of study by the administration, and lack of adherence to SACS/COC requirements.
Everyone understands the impact of the economy, but when the economy is used as license to abuse the students contracted terms to receive the specific education that they and their families have paid hard earned money and time to receive and the existing faculty and staff have not been allowed to participate in a solution and have been wrongly terminated this is an injustice that should be exposed to the local community and dealt with by the court of law.

when a person's spirit is broken, it is so very difficult to pick up the pieces...
I totally support the writings by a concerned student. There may be some pieces of this mess that are not clearly understood by the students and general public on the side of the top administration of Daytona State BUT the lack of communication and lack of respect given to all parties involved is evident.
Students in these "sunset" programs are not sure what to do, they are so broken, so distraught, so confused and little is being done to assist them.
The top administration of Daytona State, wants all to believe that all is shinny and bright at the school, it is NOT. There is little to no room to have discussions especially if you disagree with the top administrations thinking. Ask people that work there, opps - you cant they are gone.
What does that tell you. Troubled

My heart goes to you and all persons being adversely affected by top administration of DSC.
I hope the legal files will bring some justice however so much damage is done.
A leadership that does not welcome differing opinions, and gives out harsh treatment to those that question or voice an objection is very poor leadership. So Sad.
