How far would the beachgoers have to go to get to higher ground? Is there higher ground in Florida?

Wow. Warning signs for everything. A tsunami? Puleeze...the real reason is that if one were to ever hit and no sign was posted, some ambulance chasing lawyer would come along and sue. They would say thaty their client wasn't properly warned. Just like signs at a lake for alligators. Duh, you're in Florida.

Another example of government wasting tax dollars. Did you notice “Signs have already been made, but they may never see the Daytona sun.”

Classic!!!!!

30+ miles. Good luck outrunning a tidal wave over that distance!

I don't know, is it me or does it seem to other people that the government and the media want to keep us all in a constant state of fear and paranoia? Markus Aurelius, I have to agree with you, it's probably someone in govt. who wants to cover his/her butt against being sued! I don't know what Florida is like in bad conditions which have been predicted, but here in the DC area we can't get people out of the city in an orderly fashion when there's just something like an inch of snow on the ground, much less - God forbid- there'd be a sudden and unexpected disaster. Perhaps the govt. is going to be this paranoid about every little thing, they should put signs at the Florida border with something like "You are now entering Florida; abandon all hope, ye who enter here?"

Your best bet if a Tsunami were to hit is to try to get on the 4th story or higher of a condo, hotel, office building, etc... And you better hope that the wave isn't big enough to reach you. You won't have time to run away from it otherwise.

And signs on the beach are retarded. Way to waste tax payers money.

I think we need the signs. Then let's get signs for the following:

1) WARNING - Bird poop: Cover your food and don't look up

2) WARNING - morons with loud music in their cars

3) WARNING - Sand can get in your car. Vacuum accordingly

4) WARNING - Daytona Beach is run by idiots. Move now or be dragged into idiocy yourself.

Does anyone remember the giant wave that hit Daytona on the night of July 3, 1992? I'm surprised the article didn't mention that.

It wasn't a tsunami. It was termed a "rogue wave" and was estimated to be 10ft high. It did damage several cars that had parked on the beach. The best theory of the cause seems to be a line of T-storms on the ocean, but I find that explanation odd.

You know, I live on the West Coast, where there are tsunami warning signs EVERYWHERE--they might as well be stuck to the back of your car--and believe me, it does not hurt tourism at all.

But they are useless. So why have them.

Yeah, right. Keep your. burning with salt water eyes that you can barely see with the bright sun in them, peeled towards the ocean, the entire time you're there. Then you can see the wave of water that is getting ready to go right over your head. Forget about out running it to the 4th story of anything, as you'll get there with it anyway. Signs? Who reads or heeds them, anywho?

Good post and oh how true ! It does seem like the goverment wants to keep a certin amount of fear going over something. I love Florida, hence the reason for being on here. They should read our local news sometime. Then they would love Florida even more....LOL

I always get the impression this is more about some local governments covering their liability arse than anything else. I loved that statement from the spokeman from Myrtle Beach: "I think our visitors are sophisticated enough to realize that a tsunami is a long shot but take comfort in knowing that we're ready should one occur."

Right.

Sugar Loaf Mt. is in Apopka and overlooks Lake Apopka. I believe it's the highest area around. Check it out, as the roads going up are pretty dang steep! I put Clermont by accident....

I am not sure where Sugar Loaf fits into the scale but there are no mountains (only things named for mountains lol) in almost entirely flat Florida. Fortuantely our ground is sandy which drains water well or we would have more flooding problems. There are only a few mildly hilly areas and the highest hill isn't Sugar Loaf according to this site:

Daily Horoscope for December 5

Cancer

You're much more in command of your emotions today, which is just as well. You can get a lot done, as your personal energy and natural empathy is high. You'll be especially effective when it comes to clearing your desk of all the paperwork, and I'm not talking about shoving it on to the floor, either. If you've been waiting for news of a pay rise or bonus, it could arrive any moment now.
