Racism in Batson, and Liberty

Hey backroad, I have lived in The Liberty area for 50 years and have now retired. Liberty County has had some problems,like any other County,but overall it's not a bad place to retire.

I have question about racism. There are white people from Africa, if these white people from Africa moved to the U.S. and have white children are the white children then African Americans? I would like to know what anyone else thinks about this.

Good morning Backroad. I don't think there are any Black people in Batson or Saratoga and no Blacks in the School District. For some reason Blacks do not like it in the Big Thicket area. You can get lost real easy in the Big Thicket. Backroad, have you been over to Liberty Dispatch blog.com . Sometimes there is some intersting local news there.

I am a black man that once lived in Batson with my (white) wife and our child and they are still there. So no everyone there isn't like that although yes most of the people there are. That is why we put our child in a school other than West Hardin.

good morning Wow........this is the 21st century....I find it unbelievable that hate and racisim such as many people witnessed and lived through in the 40's through the 60's still exists....

I try to avoid racisim as much as I can. It is clearly alive and active in today's society. The White and AA races are both guilty of having race haters within there ranks......

I find myself avoiding the general public as much as I can by sticking to my daily routine of living and keeping to myself. In many respects society has become more suspicious and hateful than it was 40 years ago.

If black folks can be proud of living in mostly black communities then whites certianly can do the same. This is a country of equal rights. I for one am glad that I go deer hunting near these towns once a year and am able to escape the chaos of houston. I enjoy celebrating my caucasion heritage with my fellow white man, the same way any other race or religion is free to in this country. God Bless America.

I have met some good people here in Liberty, but on the other hand, if you of color,remember about 76% white and about 24% black. Ames Texas is 96%black. Ames is about 3 miles east of Liberty.

It's funny to read all the comments about Batson / Saratoga. I went to school at West Hardin and I am Mexican. As a kid I endured alot of the racism that you speak about. I was harrassed for 10 years and it continued years after I graduated. I remember a time that a coach sent a student to tell me to get off the sidewalk N!$$er. In Jr. High I had a teacher that would not teach certain chapters in social studies because he said that there were N!$$ers in the chapter. And he said this out loud to the class. Those comment didn't offend anyone because it was normal. You can find people that dressed up as blacks with painted faces in there school annual.
Years later the towns that make up West Hardin have not changed. Don't get me wrong. The area has alot of good people that live there, but there are still those families that have contributed to generations of ignorance and racism.

I'm going to Batson soon to see my last family member alive down there. I was looking up the history of the area to share it with my kids before we go. I was disappointed to see this post. My family came from that area and all were and are, educated. There has been a persistent racial bias that has always been there. I always believed it came from being uneducated. The issue is mostly that people won't look at the problem square in the face. It is an ugly issue and people don't like looking in the mirror. My family was raised to work around the issue. We were taught to value the individual and the individual's acts and deeds. Personal accountability and doing the right thing are what pulls someone through this kind of bias.

The district having a lack of money and being able to provide schools and education are why there are one room schools. The people there want to live making their own decisions and care for their own families. They are replicating the same conditions that they were raised under. This applies to whatever race they person is. There is only so much money that can be taxed from the people. The people that have chosen to remain are those that accept or never question the way things are. It is a self segregated system that has evolved over the generations. The same problem persists everywhere. In other areas there is more activity to cover it up.

About the most unbiased and racially integrated place that I've seen is in the military and the same problems are there too.

If you want to beat this problem you have to be able to look in the mirror and say that each one of us has a bias. We have to recognize it and make a conscious effort to change it. Be ready to have a lot of hateful things being said about you, because you'll be viewed as a rabble-rouser.

By the way my family that is from Batson originally were all liberals. I'm from conservative part of the family.
