One thing comes to mind -manners- on both sides.

Courtesy of our twisted culture which both glorifies and degrades our bodies, we have the attitude we do. God made us with no clothes on.
He was not ashamed of us, and neither should we be.
It is an issue worthy of deeper discussion.

Perhaps the reason why some of us are put off by a woman breastfeeding in public is we seem to think it is undignified, common, peasantlike, immodest. This attitude is taught. We, in our intellectually advanced society, in theory should realize that it is no more than a necessary bodily function beneficial to a physically immature one of our kind. It is quite different from elimination and the sexual act. Personally, knowing the benefits of breast feeding an infant, I have no problem with it in public in general; though circumstances should dictate whether or not a person does so.

It's a matter of decorum. At a picnic, I would have absolutely NO qualms about a woman breastfeeding her infant in public. Most women who do simply place a blanket over themselves and the infant while nursing. At the workplace is an entirely different matter. There a person is supposed to work, giving the boss the benefit of a full days' work. Ideally, the child should be weaned first before the woman returns to work; but we do not live in an ideal world. A simple retreat to the ladies room should take care of that delicate matter. This takes away part of the disdain of having to bring an infant into the workplace, where it doesn't belong.

While there are times when it is inappropriate, that does NOT mean it is disgusting, common or undignified.

If someone appears to be upset by another breastfeeding in public, it is best for the one feeding her infant to consider the other's feelings on the matter, so as not to cause undue ill feelings. However, the objecting person should also realize that it is a scientifically natural function that is separate from the acts of elimination and sex; and therefore should not be objected to. I would expect more maturity out of that person.

How we degrade our own bodies and how this fosters an attitude of disgust is a matter for another post. Suffice it to say that the porno industry would have no power if we all had the proper attitude toward our bodies.

I think that breastfeeding in the public is natual and if I was a woman I would breastfeed it in the public if he/she is hungry. I like women breast feeding their babies because it is natual to do. Like some women like to breastfeed their babies until their four-years-old because some toddlers like the breastmilk.

You might want to look at the biological advantages and DISadvantages in breastfeeding as late as four though. In today's society also where we expect kids to be in preschool at 3, that is not practical. Kids need more nourishment than breastmilk at age four.

As a man I have absolutely no right to tell a woman anything about brestfeeding.
That would be like the Pope telling people how to screw.

I nursed both my children, one born in Europe & one born in Hawaii. Discrection is the key, however, if my children were hungry and I had no options they were fed. Asking women to go to the restroom to breastfeed is like asking you to take your lunch into the restroom also. Come on America! We really are talking about what is in the best interest of the child.

my daughter is now 20 and cannot understand the
"big deal" about breastfeeding in public. i think the formula companies did a great marketing job for many years, and now we need to remove the stygma and get back to what God intended.

I can't understand how feeding a baby is lewd or of bad manners. What is it about breastfeeding that is so offensive? The breast itself? Why are people so ashamed of the human image?

If I had to guess any sensible logic behind these emotions and opinions I'd say that it may have something to do with the fact that since breasts are hidden from men's sight for much of their lives, they may elicit a sexual response in men when viewed (not to mention the sight of a nursing baby may stir a natural, subconscious desire to reproduce in some men). But rather than accepting this sexual response as a natural artifact that is part of the human experience, it is condemned as the effect induced by some perversion - which casts the act of breastfeeding in public as lewd.

Breasts are part of the human body. They are not scary; they will not hurt you. If you get aroused from looking at a woman breastfeeding, then shrug it off and move on. Men get spontaneous erections during the day anyway - this is no different. It's part of life and nothing to be ashamed about. It's as natural as, well, breasts.

So lighten up!

"I can't understand how feeding a baby is lewd or of bad manners. What is it about breastfeeding that is so offensive? The breast itself? Why are people so ashamed of the human image"?

Because nobody wants to see a human being put his/her wet mouth all over some womens sagging nasty boobs thats why.

A breast is a private part same as a male p*nis, do we expose that too in public? I dont think so , so why should a breast be anything different and less offensive??

And a nother thing too _R_E_C_ men get aroused by breast because breast are sexual, they are wired to be that way. So if you ever wonder why men get aroused by womens breast and why they are sexual because you women brought this upone yourself. Maybe if you would stop pleasing us men with your low-cut tops, and expensive breast implants, then maybe men wouldnt veiw them as sex toys. But apparently you women are the ones who are truly contradicting yourselves and being quite hypocriticle

Urinating is natural and so is sex, do we do that in public too??

Again _R_E_C_ you women need to stop blaming us men for your sexual fantasys such as trying to get admiration from us by how smut and trashy you dress with your low-cut tops, your short mini skirts and expensive breast implants. Your the ones who brought this perversions on yourselves, but then wanna put the blame on men for veiwing them as sex toys. Well isnt that what your doing too _R_E_C_?? Stop trying to be a conradicting hypocrite like showing how sexy your body parts are like some Paris Hilton W***e

What does feeding a baby in public have to do with a baby being hungry dave?

How is using an exclusive area or breastfeeding in a bathroom gonna hinder ones feeding time?

So what your saying is , is that without the concerns of ones body in public rather than the concerns of a hungry child that the baby will die of starvation??

Well thats based on your irrational way of thinking dave plus not to mention of how misguided you sound.

Without the public eye, how would that affect the babys feeding time? does the public eye revolve around a babys starvation for food?

No it doesnt because its not about a hungry child, its about being self centered and looking for 10-15 minutes of fame in public.

Urinating is natural too, but would you wanna see someone dropp their pants down in public all because it comes natural to pee in public?

To Smitty:

I dont think its a matter of being hot or not, just show some manners and class as a women if your gonna raise your kids. Women do need to be held up to a way more higher standard when raising children

Urinating and deficating is just as natural as breastfeeding. Do you urinate and deficate in public?

Passing gad is natural, do you enjoy people passing gas in your immediate general vicinity?

I didnt think so. Have some manners. Pump some milk before you go out or go somewhere and feed them thats NOT in plain view or middle of people traffic.

Trust me, nothing arousing about a woman popping out her teet and feeding a child with it.
