‘Seed Bugs’ Invade Homes Across Northern Nevada

A bug invasion has caused quite a nuisance for several families in northern Nevada, and now the insects have been identified.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture says seed bugs, or Melacoryphus lateralis, have invaded homes from Reno to Fernley.

Debbie and Ed Oversen just moved into their new house in Dayton a month ago but just a few weeks after that, the bugs started invading their house by the thousands.

"We've been vacuuming forever, vacuuming until 3 AM," says Debbie. "Vacuuming bugs, zapping them off the wall, the ceiling and everything else."

State Entomologist Jeff Knight says he's not sure why the bugs come in such large numbers. He said the bugs are expected to stick around for the next few weeks, before dying out on their own.

Experts say the bugs feed on vegetations native to the area. But they say the insects are now focused on reproducing, and most likely won't harm your plants.

The seed bugs are attracted to white ultraviolet lights so avoid placing those around your house. Also bug sprays or insecticidal soap should help in the short term.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture also says the bugs are not boxelder bugs, and there is no connection between these and the fires burning in California.

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Cancer

You feel the urge to move onward, powered by your wisdom: when you're right, you're right. You may feel that any further explanation is unnecessary, but the people you're dealing with might need it spelled out for them. Take the time to draw a picture or use smaller vocabulary words to get your point across, Cancer. A public demonstration will probably prove to be the last word on the subject.
