A 20% to 50% success rate is an overall failure.

I suspect many of the students in these advanced classes should not be there. After concentrated study in the specific subject, they were unable to demonstrate adequate proficiency.

Only motivated and prepared students should be enrolled in the advanced placement classes. The others only waste teacher and fellow student time. If the students are motivated, but unprepared, they should be enrolled in remedial classes and take the advanced courses later (or wait for college).

I agree with the post by Disappointed. You hit the nail on the head about the reality concerning our students and schools. Unfortunately the school system will never listen to you or I but someday things may change for the better.

I disagree, the high school AP courses are important even if the students do not choose to take the exam, if they score below a 3 on the exam, or even if not choose to go to college. Students opt for these classes because they are more challenging and they are often a better choice for students who would be bored in a regular class. Several teachers in the AP courses I took in a Howard County high school simply had the attitude that if you did not want to be there, just leave. They would gladly transfer you to a less challenging class or even let you sit in the library during class.

Perhaps you are under the impression that the AP exam determines the student's grade in the HS course. Passing the AP test simply means that they may get college credit for the course (depending on the College).

I don't agree! As a 24 yr old born an raised in Columbia,MD! I attended Wilde Lake High an Howard High. These programs helped me learn vital skills, an helped me further my education. Taking them as well as deciding a Major in College! So I totally disagree!

You must really love this guy. Maybe you should write a poem about your love for him. Or send him some flowers. Nobody cares dude. You both are children and need to grow up. There is life beyond your mom's basement.
