Me and my bro took a tour
Looking for the history de 'jour.
We heard about a killin''bout soldiers long ago.
We wondered, where in the ground did they go?
Could it be that old cemetery out on 8 on a hill;
Resting their bones after all these years still?
So Tom and I put on our hiking boots
And went lookin' for the graves of those recruits.
Supposedly they were comin' back from the battle of New Orleans;
decided to stop in Dayton on the river shore for some baon and beans.
While camping, some Indians they spied
They took up the chase and shouted: "$5.00 a head is the bounty; dead or alive."
70 strong they surged,after their bounty prize.
Straight into an ambush the enemy had had set so wise.
Only 10 survived according to History.
Where then, are they buried, is a mystery.
PS: Tom and I didn't find any markings that gave a clue to the ancient ambush. But we did note how uncared for is this historic spot. Perhaps in your adventures you may wish to read the booklet, "DAYTON". Then, maybe, you can set your sights on your own, "Stand by Me" moment. Perhaps you can solve the mystery and help get this historic spot cared for as it should be.
You, if you've in Dayton for awhile might recognize some of the headstone names buried there.
