Nugget, Co-op find customers like perishables in prominent spot

Aug 17, 2012 Full story: Davis Enterprise 8

Davis shoppers are particularly interested in fresh produce, meats and other perishables, say representatives of two locally based grocers - Nugget Market and the Davis Food Co-op. This is reflected in the way products are arranged, with an eye toward the route through the store that a typical customer pushing a shopping basket might take.

If the nugget boy really wanted produce in a prominent spot then they wouldn't have whined and cried so much to the city of Woodland when Walmart brought in produce and again when Walmart proposed a neighborhood market in the mall at the old gottshalks location.

They are just looking out for their market share. There is nothing wrong with that.I am not a Walmart hater like some but I must say that the selection at walmart can hardly be called a produce section.Very small selection and poor quality."Nugget Boy"as you call him does a great job at presentation and selection.I have no idea whatsoever why you would try to bad mouth the smaller stores with better selection and more locally grown produce unless you are secretly a member of the Walton clan.Maybe you just like to drag people down for your own enjoyment.

Sorry, that was supposed to be "Nugget Boys", as in the brothers. I do not bad mouth the smaller stores what I disagree with is one merchant who happens to have a lot of pull with city leaders convincing the city to constantly harrass another merchant for so called city code violations. Much of the produce that was available at Walmart was from the same suppliers that supply Nugget and Food 4 Less. You did know that both sell the same stuff didn't you since the Nugget boys also own the Food 4 Less?

I donít get it, BLB. Iíve bought produce at the Vacaville locations of Wal-Mart and Nugget, and the former is uniformly disgusting while the latter is of great quality.

Why do you have your panties in a bunch over this? When a walmart comes to town they usually ask the planning commision or board of supervisors for all kinds of variances and zoning changes to make the project happen. They look out for their interests so why shouldn't the guys at Nugget do the same. That's how business is done. Are you suggesting that smaller businesses should just sit back and let Walmart take over in every community they come to?Do you know that when walmart wants approval for a new store they often pay off city leaders to turn their heads to code violations and deviating from the city's general plan and zoning. Why not call them out on that?Sure Nugget has something to gain but who else will call foul other than someone who has something to gain or lose?`"The nugget boys"owe it to themselves, their employees and the residents of the community to do this and if they are a publicly traded company they owe it to their stock holders.Welcome to America. If you don't like it find somewhere else to live.
