Full story: Daily Democrat

Megan Lin gave her fiancee Ellen Kersten a Valentine's Day surprise when they went to receive a "certificate of inequality" from Yolo County Clerk-Recorder Freddie Oakley.

If people in Alabama were to vote for interracial marriage it would probably be defeated, does that make it right? Of course not. One day in the future our childrens, children will see how backwards we were at this time, I just hope they are not able to read some of the posts on the comments page because then they will think that all people at this time were bigots and narrow minded.

I am more appalled that they made it a front page story than anything else... I have no hate towards it and I am not against people being in love, just stop putting in our faces...

In a time when county services are supposedly overwhelmed by lack of funds, if the recorders office has the time and funds to disperse IOU's that really have no benefit other than to push a political agenda - This is a waste of resources and should be terminated along with the public servant (recorder) that allows it to happen.

Why is the county allowing this to happen on "county time" We are paying county employees to push this obviously personal agenda of the clerk recorder. How much is being spent on this nonsense! Not to mention the stupid souveneer ballots handed out at the last presedential election, I have never seen that done before. Maybe time for the Grand Jury to look into this waste of resources. Do you hear me County Supervisors?

Would this be considered an abuse of public office? Just wondering...

OK I just went to Clerk Recorders Website and found this: "Due to current budget constraints, as of JULY 01, 2010, the Clerk Recorder Office will NO LONGER accept or process Passport applications for the U.S. State Department".
So they can't find the time or money to do passport applications but they can do the faux marriage license thing, something smells here. INVESTIGATE AND PROSECUTE! fraud waste and abuse.

Also from the Clerk Recorder website:

On Monday August 17, 2010 the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling imposing a stay on enforcement of the ruling on the unconstitutionality of Proposition 8 from August 4, 2010. Upon consultation with Yolo County Counsel, the Yolo County Clerk Recorder will comply with the orders of the court, and continue with normal business operations in compliance with current laws in effect.

So in a sense they are faux breaking the law with the faux marriage licenses and wasting tax dollars at the same time....These questionable actions and therefore attitudes need to be investigated. Why is a person or persons allowed to push their ideals while using a public office to do so?

I see, you are fine with equality, as long as no one show that equality in public?

I think you need to re-examine your claim of "no hate."

Couldn't have said it better myself. Someone needs to speak up as to what funds were used. If Freddie Oakley used her own funds to make IOU's she still did this on County time. So City Council, don't tell me you need to raise fees for something I pay when this type of nonsense is going on and then published for all to see. Freddie does need to move on!

Your Daily Democrat Site? Whatever, progressive thought has nothing to do with wasting tax dollars during this economic crisis. If I see waste or abuse then I will raise a stink no matter what the agenda. Get over yourself, go get another degree so you can feel that much more superior to everyone else.
You are right

If only we could put a stop to this issuance of a few I.O.U.s on one day each year then the city, the county, the state, and even the federal government would be in the black.

Please stop using the deficit as an excuse to hate...

k thanks

Hmmm... So people should simply not concern themselves with the paper of record in their county seat?

No - You are right, because if it's ok for a few IOU's, than it's ok for a few office supplies to be stolen, and if that's ok than it's ok to use the state car for personal business, and if that's ok than who would mind given a contract to a relative, and if that's ok than why not give ourselves (public servants) a raise (Bell Council), and if that's ok than why not just take everything the tax paying public makes. It is only using the deficit to hate those who abuse public money and public office for personal gain or their personal agenda, both of which are wrong to do. And maybe if everyone would quit looking the other way while these abuses are happening, then yes maybe we would be back in the black.....
