How ironic Loren that you say if you cross the border illegally you get things like a job, a driver’s license, social security card and so forth. This is America, the land of the free, the home of the brave. What did all those people get who came to this country in the first place? Free land. That is what they got in this land of opportunity, free land, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, FREE, FREE, FREE!!!!! What you and most of America do not understand or acknowledge is that the first people of this great nation have been fighting terrorism since 1492! Funny how history has a way of repeating itself in some form or another!

The people of this land were fighting "terrorism" before 1492. Individual nations (tribes) captured, enslaved, tortured, and killed each other long before the "white man" showed up.

Huh? So the indigent people were killing each other off long before we arrived, we just helped finish them off??? They were also enslaving each other, was slavery really a major tribal practice? Wasn't there something about blankets or intentional spreading of disease, massacring of women and children, etc.? Really, they all killed each other off long before European settlers came along. I'm sure there were battles between the indigent tribes, but nothing close to the genocidal ways of the settlers, seriously how can you make such a claim? There's no comparison.

Very creative, yet factually inaccurate take on history.

I find it hard to believe that we are living in the 21st century with remarks such as this one. it is straight out of the early 1800's when you could own a slave and only Whites got a decent education. As high school student I am glad not many of us read this newspaper. How are we to progress with such backward thoughts. And yes I am American and have papers, and am sadden by such an article.

Ms. Polete,

Can you explain the roller coaster metaphor please. When exactly were we at the peak of the roller coaster? What is the symbolism of this peak, a better time(fiscally, morally, what) and when did it happen? Sounds like you think we're at the top now and will plunge to the abyss if we can't stop Obama?

Is it your thought that the Obama administration is going to "spend us off the rails" as a result of the bail outs and possible expansion of health care coverage? Would you prefer the Obama administration just let the banks go under? What do you think would have followed? What would you have preferred?

Were you just as concerned about the debt our nation would incur when the decision to invade Iraq, albeit under completely false pretenses, was hastily passed through and implemented by the Bush administration? How many hundreds of billions of dollars has that cost us? Did you know that Bush is the only wartime president to not raise taxes, thus increasing the country's debt even more than it had to be In other words, it's a sacrifice, tax payers sacrifice their income to fund the war(civic duty,) which if you supported wouldn't have been a big deal, right? We wouldn't have as much debt, that's for sure. Either way we're paying for that miscalculation, Bush just passed the buck to generations to come.

We can go round and round trying to find post hoc justifications for the war, but the reality is the reasons and motives for invading Iraq ultimately couldn't hold water and we're left paying off a debt now reaching 1 trillion. Maybe you're fine with that, I'm not. Where's was the fear of the fiscal abyss while the hundreds of billions were piling up, as a result of an unnecessary war?

If out of control and unnecessary fiscal spending is a big concern of yours, maybe look at the number the previous president did on us in his 8 years in the WH, not just the one year the Obama administration has spent dealing with the messes handed off to them from the previous WH occupant.

Ms. PoleteWrote, RE: the US immigration policies "If you cross the North Korean border illegally you get 12 years hard labor, if you cross the Iranian border illegally you are detained indefinitely,... And we call these other countries "crazy." It's time to get back to basic common sense and responsibility."

I find it appalling that you would even come close to suggesting that we look to N. Korea and Iran as examples of how the US should handle its border issues or any policy issue for that matter. Moreover, it's especially atrocious seeing as two American journalists were unjustly sentenced to over a decade of imprisonment for crossing the N Korean border and three American hikers are still being held under suspicion of espionage for accidentally wandering over the Iranian border.

Is this really the US you want to live in and associate with? The countries you reference in your letter are the antithesis of democracy, freedom, civil rights and justice, if that's the US you want, I believe it is YOU and those sharing your sentiment that we should be afraid of, not Obama.

Ms. Polete Wrote: "America, stand up, fight back and take back the America it used to be, before it is too late and we lose all of our freedoms and rights. Some people say this could never happen in America, but in the mid-1930s that's what Germany thought too!"

How deliciously cliche, yet another implied statement that Obama is going to transform the US into a modern day Nazi Germany. Still don't get that one. I also find some comedy in this, seeing as you reference some pretty radical regimes in your letter in a somewhat positive light or at least as potential guidance for the US's future border policies.

So you believe we should "Take back the America it used to be," what part of America have you lost in the past year? What is this golden area, far removed from this Nazi, socialist, communist, tyrannical America it has become in one year under Obama? Can your memory reach back past Obama's inauguration? What are we taking back?

I also find some comedy in your, "we might become Nazi Germany" statement, seeing as you've referenced some pretty radical regimes in your letter in a somewhat positive light or at least as potential guidance for the US's future border policies.

It does not speak well for the democrat that you continue to publish such biased and uniformed opinions and articles. I wish you would reflect the diversity of this lovely town and present other opinions as well. More importantly, I would hope that presenting articles or opinions that are based on facts rather than biases would be at the foundation of your purpose.

You are an idiot!!!!! how are you going to compare such different countries with such lose ended comments about their migration laws Officer Piggy? First I am very upset that ignorant, racist persons like you are in charged of keeping society secure, by your editorial the only thing that you seem to want to guard is white privilege in America. Second, the US and specially California's economy would go to shit if there was not a source of cheap labor of a semi-slave class that could be oppressed by stigmatizing them and dehumanizing them by making the "Illegal". The people coming over to the US to work, left their homelands due to horrible working and living conditions created by the Neoliberalist project in Latin America not because they love to come to work for assholes like you. I am shocked by your RACIST OVER GENRALIZED remarks about the benefits undocumented modern slave workers get when they come over to the US. AS A FUCKING COP YOU SHOULD KNOW A LITTLE BETTER THAN THIS. I hope one day you will realize how terribly wrong and confused you are and maybe start working for making america safe FOR ALL as it was intended to be, until that Day you will be Officer PIGGY Oink Oink!

Actual published comment in Daily Democrat July 24,2001...

"FLY CONFEDERATE FLAG PROUDLY
This is regarding the fellow that was on College Street(regarding the Confederate flag). Fly it high and fly it proud, buddy. Just fly it high and fly it proud. This is not a city that gets excited about diversity and does not celebrate diversity. Fly it high and fly it proud."

From time to time I check online to this rag of a paper and nothing has changed...Good dose of bankruptcy would do the Democrat and City of Woodland a favor...

Ok, so this message is for jim smith or dorsey.

Letters to the editor are always strictly edited, you cant say something that is not accurate, etc. Its happened to me, ive had to change certain assumptions I made in my submissions.

Here you have this person who does not know immigration law. Illegals can get drivers licenses? You know that is wrong, yet you still print it. Shame on the two of you.

Ok people, pay attention.

We have often made the claim that Woodland and Yolo County are suffering from racial profiling and civil rights violations.

example 1. Loran Polete makes a reasonable statement but she really lacks founded claims. Illegals cannot, i repeat, cannot obtain a drivers license in California. If that was so, every driver in California would be mandated to buy car insurance--that is not the case. She goes on to make more claims that are really angry and illogical holding no legal foundation.

Here is the problem. Loran Polete served as a Woodland Community Service Officer for 25 years. Is this inaccurate and belligerent comment one that should be proudly shared by someone who probably had contact with Illegal immigrants in Woodland? Although she may not have liked them, she still needed to serve and protect illegals residing in Woodland California.

This is disturbing. A WPD officer admitting her bias against illegal immigrants,(most likely referring to mexicans)
Woodland has a problem.

And to the author: America needs to be taken back, but by the corrupt officers who have shamed our wonderful nation.

I have to say, I'm a bit surprised to hear a poster bring up neorealism, but it's interesting seeing as some of these posters prefer to have this issue cut both ways or at the very least don't understand the repercussions of complete deportation, Iranian-esque border policies, etc.

Yes, they do use some US tax payer funded services, but how much do Americans save/benefit from their work? Is it a wash? I don't know, but seriously think about it before you come out blaming immigrants for some(in some cases the majority) of the fiscal problems we face.

Look come back with numbers that support why illegals are bleeding us dry, then precede with your proclamation that they are a large part of the problem. As long as I hear comments like the "dark copper-skinned workers" preface any comment by members in my community about immigration issues, I will tend to believe that the issue is just as much race/xenophobic based as it is anything else.

This country WILL in fact go down the drain unless we can get back to the basic art of debate and compromise without hateful personal attacks. Unless there is a rebutal to this article published by this newspaper (not via the comments section), then we would have to believe that the press is part of the problem.
