Why must the state pay overtime to officers to patrol these bridges? Where are the SHP officers who are supposed to be regularly patrolling this area? Are there so few officers available that the counties can not be covered? If that is the case then there needs to be some permanent changes.
go to raliegh as soon as the horizon comes in to view you will see a lot of cranes they are building places for themselves.

I go to work and back across those bridges and they really kinda scare me and I go the speed limit of 55 but most others pass me like I'm standing still but I just take my time because the southbound side seems so narrow and it's even scarier when a car or tractor trailer is beside you or flies past you going 75 and the northbound side seems like the asphalt as all but fell apart and it's like riding a dirt road. I'm glad to see this, maybe people will quit driving crazy thru there and stay off my tail cause I'm going the speed limit.
I go 60-65 across that bridge 10-15 times a week in a tractor trailer and sometimes beside other trucks. The travel lanes are just as wide there as they are before and after it. Try not to be so scared. 99.99% of us mean ole truck drivers are not out to kill you. Keep your's i your lane and I will do the same.

to keith: if there was a god he could save the believers heading to the big house but since there is no "real god" this can not happen. God is a feel good logic hopefull people wish to believe in, I do not but will not disrespect those that do.

..........anyway to rest of you here........

This story/news article is about traffic enforcement at a dangerous area of I-85 that is about to imbark on construction that will last for years, it will see it's share of accidents and more than likely deaths, so a NC HWY Patrolman on duty 24/7 in that area is a great idea and worth every penny the tax payers expect and I for one am proud of my LEO that serve this state and the 100 counties of my wonderful state. I can only hope the cop haterz here at Topix will one day look at the uniform and have respect not an attitude of disrespect or fear, they serve to protect and enforce, which is in our best interests.

So our money has no better use, running out of things to buy? We are going to have troopers camped out watching speeders on the Yadkin River bridge for what? Because work crews on another bridge that is completely isolated with no traffic what so ever are going to be replacing it?
Unless my memory is out of whack you would have to drive through several barrels, cones and signs to even get to the other bridge. If that occurs, the persons speed would be the last thing on my mind. The fact that they didn't see all of the above is a little scarier.
This is just another way for the State of North Carolina to generate funds by screwing over the populace. Lets declare all of I-85 a work zone and stick it to everyone. Yes, I know that the workers won't even be close to the traffic, but we are the state, we can do what we want. Oh yeah and by the way, we are going to use tax dollars to pay the troopers, to rob our citizens at a bogus construction zone.
Why does it seem that we have the absolute dumbest politicians in the World? Why is that? Can we not ship these guys over seas and plague our enemies with them? With idiots like this, the war on terror would have lasted 5 minutes, all of the terrorist would have given up just to get away from these morons.
Control speeding, yes. Protect construction workers, yes. You want to protect them? Block that ramp with about 50 K rails (concrete dividers you see just south of the bridge in Salisbury separating the North and South bound lanes) and problem solved, no outrageous cost to me and they are far better protected.
I guess we should all be thankful, without this kind of wasteful spending we all might actually have more money than we would know what to do with.
I would much rather pay them to sit there and deter speeders, than have them racing around on Sunday mornings trying to give a 200.00 ticket. Just saying.

It was reported by the NCSHP that their guy had reached up to 120 MPH during the un-chase but their hero had slowed to a mere 95 and had tried to steer to avoid the collision. According to the data they downloaded from the Charger’s ACM their jackass was still accelerating 100% just 2 seconds before impact. The steering input data suggests more indecision than steering in the final 2 whole seconds of trying to undo a deadly wrong decision. The throttle position remained constant as he gained 10 more MPH in the 3 seconds before he finally lifted. At 5 seconds before impact the engine speed was 5056 RPM running at 111 MPH. At 2 seconds before impact the engine speed peaked at 5440 RPM having continued to accelerate to 121 MPH before he finally lifted. He had a brake light ON at 1.6 seconds and all 88 feet before impact. The last data recorded at 0.1 second before impact had him slowed to a mere 95 MPH when he split the Honda in half killing two citizens in the process.

After Goodnight finally figured out that a citizen still rolling in a left turn lane is not a citizen having stopped to yield in a left turn lane he had two seconds to impact and absolutely no control over what 4200 pounds moving at 121 MPH was going to do. The initial right turn move with maximum braking applied put that Charger into an out of control spinning slide towards the right lane and the Honda. No sort of driver input would result in recovery from that out-of-control state.

There is no hero trying to save the day. Just an idiot that despite all the training and experience he still chose to fly through a busy intersection and people are dead because of his choice. This jerk is due all of the charges that any other jerk showing such a “reckless disregard for the safety of others” would be due but the State refuses to consider all of the evidence contained in their own report. When the NCSHP chose to ignore J.D.’s blatant “reckless disregard for the safety of others” it gave the green light to every other borderline nut case LEO out there to have at it with even less fear of reprisal. If there is any justice to be had in this case it will have to come in civil court where the survivors and the estates of the victims should come into possession of Goodnight’s soul along with the NCSHP all as part of their very own new State. I still wish them the best of luck.
