Interesting idea....don't ban it but charge a smoking tax in public buildings. This way the smokers get to smoke and the city makes money on it. We can use the extra income to help non smokers who need health care due to second hand smoke. Win, win, right?
There is no way to prove anyone needs, or has ever needed, health care due to SHS exposure. Lose, Lose.

<quoted text>Perhaps since smoking and SHS generally don't kill immediately, THIS generation will now reap their 'rewards' of a shorter life brought on by those selfish smokers who insisted on smoking around them - in the home, in the car, in the restaurant, etc. That's just one possibility but definitely a very distinct one.
The problem with that theory is that very few places allow smoking anymore. The Baby Boomers and previous generations experienced far more first and second hand smoke than the current one who is not expected to live as long.

Read and see ETS is not harmful
THE world's leading health organization has withheld from publication a study which shows that not only might there be no link between passive smoking and lung cancer but that it could even have a protective effect.

Smokers need to smoke out side, further away from the front door.

Enough with this talk of banning smoking in restaurants!! What they need to ban is screaming/crying babies!!

Second-hand smoke can not be nearly as bad as the rise in my blood pressure two screaming brats caused me at the Mexican restaurant the other night!!

I will fight this ban as I have fought all of the previous ones. This is a property rights issue, business owners should have the right to determine how their business is operated, if they choose to allow it, and you don't care for it, shop elsewhere, then they will see through that how to react. Conversely, if you enjoy smoking and an establishment has banned it, you too can shop elsewhere. I do not understand the mentality that somehow non-smokers have an entitlement to protection on private property, they do not. I fully support bans in places that the public has no option on going to such as government buildings or hospitals, in those cases, it is not private property and you may not have a choice to go. I also do not believe that smokers should have some sort of entitlement to a smoking section being guaranteed for them, this is the choice of a property or business owner. I have many who will stand and fight with me but I encourage all of those who respect the property rights of themselves and others as well as those who respect the freedom of choice to call your legislators and let them know that you oppose this ban. If you do not choose to fight, do not be surprised when it is another issue involving your rights or choices that becomes the issue for legislators to dictate.
Good post.

Ain't it the truth! I love kids and that annoys the &*^% out of me too. Oh well, time to talk to our legislators and stop babies from breast-feeding and kids from going out in public. Saaaaad.

I think they should ban driving as well, not only for the unhealthy pollutants they emit into our air, but for the shear number of people killed every year in accidents!!

You know how many lives would be saved if no one drove? Or left their home for that matter? Why I bet it's staggering!!

While we are at it, we should talk to our legislatures about differing opinions from even speaking as we all know how socialist tyrants hate being questioned the same way they questioned things in the 60s and 70s.

It is those aging hipsters and their spawn who are causing such a stir. They are running out of causes so they are going after our individual rights. One can only wonder what will be next now that Americans have it in their heads that government has all of the answers.

Several cities have already banned cars off certain streets. Manhattan Island,NY and the UK are going to ban all cars.
Doctors kill more people than all the auto accidents and guns put together.

In Europe, which is mostly more congested than the US, cities have made it very difficult (discouraging) to use a car in the city. Of course, they built a great city and intercity PT infrastructure and it works like a charm.
The US with it's suburban sprawl and lack of PT is ages away from this.

Would love to see it coming here though.

And yes, I am for an all out smoking ban in all public places. Period.
Want to smoke, do it in your own home or in private clubs.
