well, here goes more tourists out of santa cruz, the more the do gooders do the harder it makes it for this city to survive. I use to smoke and yes it bothers me when people smoke around me, but come on people if we keep making petty rules like no smoking outdoors then people will either move on or just break the law and stress the legal system. so have fun enforcing this. 8-)

That's exactly what people said when California banned indoor smoking, and again when the ban was explicitly extended to bars, yet in both cases the predicted collapse of entertainment industries didn't occur.

In fact, many bars reported an increase in patrons, and people staying longer since they could enjoy their refreshments without choking on smoke.

The vast majority of Santa Cruzans don't smoke. The majority of Californians don't smoke. Even nationwide, more people don't smoke than do. It's about time the usage rights for shared common space reflect the healthful actions of the majority versus the harmful habits of the minority.

Children "picking up cigarette butts"? No problem with them picking up old chewing gum? Old dog poop? Candy wrappers?
You've done it now, City Council. I won't visit, I won't shop. No problem for you though, you don't want me here anyway. Zieg heil.

Wow...Gotta be kidding me! Soon it will be what to wear, what not to wear. Whites only. Blacks and Hispanics banned from 9-5pm. Council heffers..your all such full of swine. You are going to have to ban cars..all autos from these places because it is bad to...not just smokers. Businesses prepare to go out of business over this...start making plans to move on elsewhere.

I agree with tee..this is an illegal move, taking yet again rights away...not good. the more this is allowed, the more it occurs. People, you need to speak up even if you dont smoke. Smokers are people and are entitled to smoke. if you thought SCPD was a pain in the rear..wait until you get new recruits that want to show off and score points..will be heckling the heck out of people.

City Council for RECALL.

Do you think smokers will heed this new law? There are still bars that thumb their noses at the no indoor smoking ban and patrons smoke there all the time. This is another rediculously un-enforcable edict!

The dumb City Council has no brains. If they would just clean up the bums from downtown........The bums are going to continue to smoke because what are you going to do, give them a ticket that they are never going to pay?

I am not a smoker but this is a dumb outdoor law.
Clean up the bums downtown instead.

You are an idiot for sure to say the VAST SCzn do not smoke. Like your a genius..NOT. This ban is breaking the law and I hope someone on the side of the constitution will totally fight this illegal move. Santa cruz..start taxing the rich here and leave the poor smokers alone. Dumb @sses of the council...time to get diverse people on it. whities just dont cut it no more.
1) I disagree; most don't. Maybe most of your friends do, but most citizens don't.
2) It's not illegal.
3) I COMPLETELY AGREE. Another FRIVILOUS law put in place by the tools of the wealthy and prvileged Westsiders who won't be satisfied until Santa Cruz is DISNEYLAND, all fake and clean and hygenic.
And they keep passeing laws which make the Westies feel better, but which can't be enforced well. Which weakens the respect people have for ALL LAWS.
Anybody remember the PERFUME/FRAGANCES BAN? Seen any enforcement on that one lately? No wearing strong fragrancs while standing in line at the movies? I think the cops are ignoring that one, and rightly so.

This ban is a good idea. It will force smokers to the many side streets so tourists and residents can walk through the clouds on their way to Pacific Ave. It will also decrease state tobacco tax income, which never benefited the city any way.

Meh.....Why are they thinking it is a good idea for this proposed tax on cigarettes be used for cigarette butt cleanup when schools and education need it so much more! Why not have those who are busted for this new smoking ban be made do community service picking up these butts instead! Come on!

How ironic that this ordinance was drafted by a pot smoking UCSC hippie educator turned career politician since 1981.

Anybody remember the PERFUME/FRAGANCES BAN? Seen any enforcement on that one lately? No wearing strong fragrancs while standing in line at the movies? I think the cops are ignoring that one, and rightly so.
Sure do! This was the brainchild of that same UCSC pothead too. Anybody who smokes marijuana for kicks is violating state and federal drug laws. In that case, why should he expect nicotine addicts to obey his own hypocritical drug laws?

The statistics are that 90% of Santa Cruzans DON'T SMOKE. You are the idiot to use such terms a 'whities', and btw - it's "don't cut it ANY more".

I noticed West Cliff drive is included in the ban - and even the sidewalks of city building. That was my last City Council meeting.

So, not even any designated smoking areas in any of those large, sweeping areas? They only do so much about cleaning up downtown as far as hard drugs, aggressive behavior, panhandling--and say they don't have the law enforcement funds to do it or there are civil liberty issues. But no rights here. And no recognition for disease of addiction or any of the actual issues of why people start smoking (usually in youth; tobacco companies target youth) or how hard it is to stop (professionals often say harder to quit than heroin).
City officials complain that citizens look at issues on the surface. Well, look in your mirrors.
Time go go back to internet shopping. Why support merchants downtown or the city's tax base when you can get things so much cheaper online and not pay taxes?

Why don't they put out ashtrays? Because then they couldn't complain about the butts.

No, here in wisdom by the bay they want to make smokers put butts in trashcans - where they could start a fire...

OK FINE ,HOW ABOUT BANNING SCREAMING KIDS ON PUBLIC PROPERTY, I WANT A PEACEFUL STROLL ...OR MAYBE WALKING STINKY ,SCOWLING DOGS THAT **** ALL OVER THE SIDEWALK....HOW ABOUT OLD F_CKERS WHO CAN'T DRIVE AND THINK THEY CAN...
I COULD GO ON & ON....
TRY AND STOP ME, I'LL JUST WATCH FOR COPS

Just give up your cancer causing habit and quit forcing it on me. If screaming kids caused lung cancer to bystanders, than ban them too. That being said, I don't agree with micro-managing, but this one makes sense. I see kids 12-17 smoking downtown, we should try to protect them too. If you can't take a half hour break from smoking when your downtown then you have a problem.
