So true, this is as sad as it gets. I wish that this tragedy had never happened and this family had not been torn apart.

I do have to get a little annoyed at the references to marijuana use as the possible cause of the accident; confirm or deny this allegation (lab test can confirm THC in no more than a day) because at this point nobody is going to remember the facts, once they come out, just the inferences that the police are making and what the Sentinel is printing. Also why the heck haven't they been able to identify the other driver (they sure seem to know his age)? Something is strange here.

Very sad. Completely heart breaking. All weekend, I keep thinking about four questions:
1) How has the normalized nature of marijuana created a public safety issue?
2) Does a compact car stand a chance out there on the open road?
3) What if everything was the same, except that the family was Mexican, and not Canadien? Finally, how would the open-mind, tolerant community of the Sentinel comments BB react?

My thoughts are with both families.

This story is so sad. The authorities need to find some way of identifying at random if someone is under the influence of marijuana when they are pulled over for traffic violations. Breathalizer tests can determine if someone is drinking, but there's nothing to test for marijuana. When I drive around Santa Cruz daily I see people doing stupid things while driving and I often wonder if they are stoned. If the police pull them over for bad driving the only thing they have to go on is the alcohol test. Nothing for pot. The only thing they can do with a stoned person under the influence of a mind altering drug is let them go. I bet a lot of people are driving around Santa Cruz every day stoned.

Why not wait for the toxicology report before adopting a REEFER MADNESS posture?

Before dying, the pot smoker was able to speak to the police. I suspect that he told them he'd been smoking before and/or while driving.

Marijuana is an hallucinogenic. Whether you want it legalized or not is a separate issue. Driving under it's influence impairs thinking processes, so whether legal or not it is illegal to smoke it and drive. Also remember Beevis and Butthead, in my experience, the people who do smoke it regularly are not the sharpest pencils in the pack. . . And, I have no admiration for people after the age 40 who have not figured out how to be high on life without substances including ETOH. . . My condolences to this young father and his beautiful son.

Being stoned doesn't make it any more or less likely to drive into oncoming traffic. He was likely messing with his cell phone or radio, which he would have done regardless of hos marijuana use.

Don't make this political....this is about a destroyed young family and the fragilness of life and a tiny baby who will barely remember his mother as a grown man. Save the arguing for the polls.

All too often I drive through Santa Cruz and smell pot wafting from cars around me. It's no different than drinking and driving.
Drugs, legal or otherwise, have once again killed an innocent person.

TERRIBLE! There is always a suspected cause of an accident listed - such as alcohol, texting, etc. Pot sucks. Unless people are using it for legitimate medical needs AT HOME it should not be legal. I don't care if this is an unpopular position or not. I am so so sick of seeing nice young kids in this town have to deal with their parent's pot smoking. Thank God most of them shun it and go on to healthy productive lives.
See what will happen if it is legalized? People will continue to say that it isn't likely that pot caused the accident. Honestly folks, grow up and become adults.
My heartfelt condolences to the innocent victims who only came to Santa Cruz to enjoy the incredible beauty of the area but instead were killed and seriously injured by the irresponsibility and stupidity of a resident.
IM SORRY

To her loving family...
I'm sorry for all of the nasty comments people are writing on this blog.
My deepest heartfelt condolences to your family.
Please don't read this blog and take it for everyone in Santa Cruz County. We are not all self centered pot heads.
Pot impairs you just as much as alcohol, prescription meds, etc. If you are impaired, in any way, shape or form, stay home. Do not drive a lethal weapon. If you don't care about yourself, that is fine, don't endanger the rest of us.
We are choosing to be safe and enjoying life, don't rob us of that.

Primitive cars. At this point, we should have transportation devices you get into, punch up your destination, and the driving is done by technology, not pot addled slackers. What progress in cars have we made in about 100 years? I'll tell you - air bags!
sheesh!

To The Family:

Our hearts go out to you, the family destroyed by this. She sounds like she was a happy person who enjoyed her life and loved her family. God Bless her soul. She was an amazing women who loved being a Mother. Let us remember that nothing else matters right now, except she is gone and her son has lost his Mother. Her husband has lost the love of his life and his life, will never be the same. I wish them all healing in their journey of grief.

Please know we are not all drug addicted idiots, some of us are normal nice people, and we grieve with you. Please ignore the rest of them.
