Collecting a nominal fee for cars parking at the beach is nothing new. The Park and Beach Board has paved parking lots, built restrooms, boardwalks and pavilions that cost money and require maintenance, to say nothing of the trash collection and beach cleanup costs.

For the same reason, Florida charges a nominal fee to park at public beaches on nearby Perdido Key.
