Oil spill slows Alabama island tourism to trickle

There are 36 comments on the www.reuters.com story from May 10, 2010, titled Oil spill slows Alabama island tourism to trickle . In it, www.reuters.com reports that:

Dauphin Island merchants say cancellations running high

Long before tar balls washed up on its sugar-white sandy beaches, the tiny barrier island at the mouth of Mobile Bay saw its main source of commerce -- tourism -- take a beating from oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico.

Dauphin Island is steeped in history and known for its pristine beaches, sport fishing and abundant bird life but merchants there say vacation traffic to the scenic resort has slowed to a trickle as an environmental disaster looms off the Gulf Coast. The slowdown comes just as the tourist season should be heating up,...

It's unfortunate that false reports of oil on the beaches at Dauphin Island and other upper coast destinations are driving away tourists at the beginning of the season. The beaches and marshes on Dauphin Island are as beautiful as ever and the local economy needs guest dollars... Go! Plana vacation today.

Can someone please be honest about Dauphin Island, my family is planning a large gathering very soon and we sure don't won't to be told all is ok and then spend our vacation time and money to find nothing but tar ball and oil slime...I have having a hard time getting the truth...please help...going the second week in June....I feel that because of this the owner should be kind and refund the deposit, just the thought of them finding tar balls should be enough to refund..Thanks
I just got back yesterday, had a terrible time there. We rented a house with a private beach on the Mississippi Sound. No way to get to it, all blocked. Heavy equipment going starting at 6 am every day for the week I was there and I am sure still going on. They keep making mounds of sand hills blocking any view, the so called private beach on the gulf side also had mounds of sand blocking all. the older kids did get to the public beach but I feel I rented a house with a private beach and expected it. I had requested a total refund from owner since day one of oil spill, kept hearing the water is beautiful, ya right, if you can get to it. My family could of gone anywhere else if a refund was given but some people are money hungry and don't care about others, even tho she will file a claim against BP. To me Dauphine Island sucked, road blocks, heavy equipment and army men daily walking the beaches daily and no private beaches, what a crappy expensive vacation. You probally rented from the same person I did.

The question is how long will this last, 1 year or 2,3,5, or 10. Gambled with no regulation and got burned. Just like wall street. What suckers we are. BP gets all the profits and we get to suffer the losses.

I lined up a beach house on DI for the 3rd week in June and keep getting emails that everything on the island is great...but research and talking to friends indicate: tons of people everywhere on the island (including lots of undesireables), lots of traffic, west end closed, frequent beach patrols by atvs, and periods of oil scent drifting in. The company will not refund me. I will never book with these guys again, I'm going with Boardwalk from here on out!
I feel your pain. I have a week booked the 19-25 June and they will not refund my money as well. They told me if they could rent it to someone else they would give me my money back. Who would want to rent anything down there now? I am very upset that I have paid for something my family can not enjoy.

We have reservations for July 17-24. I've also been trying to decide if we should cancel. I have to pay for the week on June 17. I think people are being honest about no oil on the island but I'm also afraid of all the preparation in case it hits. From what it sounds like, the island is a mess and that's just what I'm afraid of. Please, anyone who has been, be totally honest about what is going on there. From the look of the map today, it's headed right for their and Mobile bay anyway, due to hit June 3, I believe. This is so disappointing.

Why are Alabama and Mississippi mandating that all cleanup workers be residents of their state(s)? There aren't enough currently HAZWOPER-certified people available in eachc state to work the cleanup. Why turn away certified workers willing to relocate and help?! Do you WANT the crisis to continue and grow larger than it has to?

A similar situation is happening with the wildlife rescue. Tri State Bird Rescue & Research has command and control of those allowed to do wildlife rescue/rehab/release and they just are NOT bringing on board the thousands of wildlife orgs that have volunteered to help (and have qualified, trained personnel) because they want to use this oil spill for fundraising efforts for their planned expansion (search Delaware Today magazine online for article). How many poor creatures are NOT being saved that could be? How many are dying for politics and fundraising PR rights?

Don't let them fool you! I'm sure they will be part of class action lawsuit against BP and get their money for lost revenue.

Coney is still the capital of FUN.

When you cancel your rerservations, you'll want to go somewhere. Other, more peaceful sites are above, also.

Thanks. I hope to take an eastern coast road trip probably in the summer of 2012. I think we've decided on the Mackinaw City, MI area with a day trip over to the Mackinac Island. I'm sure Coney Island is great. Enjoy!

You will love it. I was out there five years ago. The Grand Hotel, the huge and various herd of horses, the wonderful lake breezes; just ducky. Take lots of wagon & sulky rides. Ride a real hackney carriage.

After Macinac, we went up to Grand Marais on the UP. I saw the Northern Lights for the first time; and also saw it stay light until 11pm. Great area. Have fun.

When you come to NY time it for late August
