Oil spill slows Alabama island tourism to trickle

Dauphin Island merchants say cancellations running high

Long before tar balls washed up on its sugar-white sandy beaches, the tiny barrier island at the mouth of Mobile Bay saw its main source of commerce -- tourism -- take a beating from oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico.

Dauphin Island is steeped in history and known for its pristine beaches, sport fishing and abundant bird life but merchants there say vacation traffic to the scenic resort has slowed to a trickle as an environmental disaster looms off the Gulf Coast. The slowdown comes just as the tourist season should be heating up,...

Over here in the central Florida gulf coast we are enjoying warm days, blue and cold gulf water. No sign of slicky-can-do yet.

YET, being the key word. Just wait, all your beaches will be a lovely shade of googey black all thanks to our addiction to oil.

The goo and globs heading your way are presently underwater and there is no means of lessening the impact on Florida's Gulf Coast. The degree to which this will harm tourism and fishing is uncertain.

Curious as to what they expect to happen and if they have any time frames. I am scheduled to have a wedding on the island...now i'm sadly rethinking the location.

Can someone please be honest about Dauphin Island, my family is planning a large gathering very soon and we sure don't won't to be told all is ok and then spend our vacation time and money to find nothing but tar ball and oil slime...I have having a hard time getting the truth...please help...going the second week in June....I feel that because of this the owner should be kind and refund the deposit, just the thought of them finding tar balls should be enough to refund..Thanks

Go. Take advantage of the discounts. Swim in the pool.

They have not offered any discount, the full price is still $4500 ocean and to swim in a pool. but with the ocean threat and having small children just doesn't make it ok..can stay home and do that.

Call and offer them 2500, or goodbye. Forget the ocean, kids will do great in the pool; or go up the Atlantic coast, where there is no drilling. The kids would love Ocean City, MD; or Long Beach Isl, NJ; or Jones Beach NY; or Old Orchard Beach, NH.

Ask them which of those beaches would be best for you.
I'm very sorry for the Gulf resorts, but they'll have to be honest, flexible, and take a hit.

I feel that the media is not giving us the correct info on this spill. We rented a beach house for the 3 week injune and are unsure what to do. The people thatwe are renting from keep sending us information that all is ok. In fact in one of the emails she stated that the oil spill would not reach the island. The on the news they say that it could reach the island. We still want to come but are unsure if its going to be worth the 5600 dollars. Can anyone help/ give us some ideas..Thanks

I've just heard of a new strategy for the endangered Gulf shore areas. Some are offering "beach guarantees." If the beach is polluted, you pay nothing.

These resort areas ought not suffer for offshore problems not of their making; but neither should you.

I lined up a beach house on DI for the 3rd week in June and keep getting emails that everything on the island is great...but research and talking to friends indicate: tons of people everywhere on the island (including lots of undesireables), lots of traffic, west end closed, frequent beach patrols by atvs, and periods of oil scent drifting in. The company will not refund me. I will never book with these guys again, I'm going with Boardwalk from here on out!
