Hi I am rather new to Valdosta and looking for things to do in Valdosta other than church, shop and eat out at so-so chain restaurants. My husband and I are seniors (55+)and have not found our niche in this community. Any suggestions? Are there any senior social groups that get together? Any seniors that want to start-up a group for walking, friendship, discussion groups for politics/environment/travel/ho bbies or arts & crafts?

Sure would like to make some friends of similiarly aged people as my husband and myself.

Any suggestions?

I guess I am proving my own point - there is NOTHING for 55+ people to do in Valdosta!

No responses. No suggestions. No ideas. No recommendations. This town is so lacking! We need NEW City Planners & Developers (as well as new Chamber of Commerce) that are willing to keep up with the rest of America and provide community-wide activities and recreation for the Valdosta populace.

VSU has wonderful outlets for a select few. The Planetarium, for example, will only allow a few handful of people during a regular showing.

The plays by the guild are so ridiculously priced that it limits people like myself on a fixed income to attend.

There is no sports center, swimming pools, aerobic classes unless you have a big budget consideration to join the YMCA.

C'mon fellow Valdostans! Be annoyed and dismayed at the lack of services/recreations/health smart activities this county & city exhibits. I DO BELIEVE that Valdosta should be about more than just sports, i.e. football.

Come over to Lakeland and you can walk around Lake Irma with me. Or we can visit the Waterfall Park next door to the Mayors house. We might even get to meet the Mayor. Any way we will have a ball.

Have you thought about volunteering with Habitat for Humanity? Or the animal shelter? I hear there is a no kill shelter opening off Exit 16 somewhere and they will surely need lots of extra hands. Grand Bay is a beautiful place for a walk or jog. Pretty sure there is a garden club. I'm not a senior but just a few suggestions. I really wish we had more public pools besides the YMCA.

For those over fifty there is a Learning in retirement Organization where you can take all sorts of interesting classes like, yoga, chair aerobics, computer classes, drawing, oil painting, and many more. the organization also offers day tours and other interesting group activities. The group is sponsored by Valdosta State University.

After living 20 years in Florida I find activities for seniors in Valdosta difficult to find something more exciting than shuffleboard, especially for single seniors.
Does anyone know of organized groups for us seniors who are still young at heart

I have lived in Valdosta for 20 years. Since I became a senior citizen it has been difficult to meet people my own age....until I joined the Senior Center on Park Avenue. There are all kinds of activities offered and a great chance to socialize. For those just arriving, or those that have been here don't dismiss Valdosta until you've given it a try.

I have been here in Valdosta over a year now and I have to say I agree with some of these ladies. There is nothing to do in this town for seniors.
