Ever heard "I'm not black I'm Dominican, Brazilian, etc"?

*First, let me say I know that not everyone in these areas are "black" but some are and I'm specifically talking about them.

I hear a lot of people say this, but for people that have lived around more diverse populations than myself, I have a question.

I've heard that the way a lot of us African Americans view "being black" is different than the way many look at it in the Caribbean and South America.

Many of those people mainly view "black" as meaning "African American" I'm told.

So I'm just wondering, when these people (who obviously have African ancestry) of the Caribbean Islands and South American countries say things like "I'm not black, I'm Dominican"......are they usually denying that they have black blood, or do they realize that they do have African ancestry but are simply saying they arent "African American?"

They are identifying by nationality, which quite honestly makes more sense than this made up race shit we got going in the US.

I think when folks do that they are going off the assumption that by Black you mean "African-American". I can kinda see why they'd think that too, because sometimes American Blacks do kind of make Blackness about us. I remember one time I was telling my friend back home how few Black folks there were at my school and I started going on about how we do have some Nigerians, this dude from Ghana, etc. He was like "okay yeah, but I mean how many of US are there. Like, Black folks?"

The one drop rule does not apply in most places in Latin America. I'm mostly Dominican and I consider myself a black woman even though I'm lightly honey glazed.

Most Dominicans and Brazilians also associate being black as lower class. People in DR and Brazil DO NOT want to be called black even if they're so black they look forest green. That's why Sammy Sosa bleached his skin. Naturally this leads to some racism between the brown skin Dominicans and dark skinned ones. At the end of the day that shit is so petty because it's black people being racist against black people.

if youre not white,i.e.(white american , german, russian, swedish, scottish, etc), youre black period, you limit yourself by claiming a nationality, thats the oldest trick in the book, divide and conquer, wake up!!!! and the american blacks arent african descent, theyre Israelites,

Those folks identify themselves based on their nationality or culture instead of by color or ancestry they are like we crazy folks do in the United States. The nationality and culture of African-Americans/Black would be simply "American" without the need to put racial qualifiers. Americans, ESPECIALLY, black people have that bad. They are always quick to call everyone who looks like them black from other countries or cultures. When those persons don't identify the way they think they should, all of a sudden, it's considered a denial of their "Blackness" or "African ancestry". It's annoying really.

thats cause they are black, it has nothing to do with language, or nationality, black is black, and theres no such thing as an african american, unless you came from africa, moved to the U.S. and became a citizen, the history of american negroes, is Israelites, not AFRICA!!!

due to the fleeing of Jerusalem, the slave trade, we came through africa, and ended up here, in the U.S., whats funny is, that americans dont even know thier history, and thats a damn shame!!!
