Whether your server is a student or not should not matter, how could that justify not leaving a tip? I have never worked in the restaurant industry, but I do feel sorry for most servers. They have put up with assholes that think they deserve excellent service and find excuses to not tip. I think a 3-5 dollars minimum tip should be added to every bill.
if u left me a 3 dollar tip on a 30 or better that would not be acceptable as minimum wage goes up servers do not we have a shot load of work we do and get paid 2.13 for it most of the time servers are responsible for all the cleaning done in the front of the house and dishes! silverwear and table Set up!

I bet servers hate it when they see black people walk in they know it won't be anything but complaints and no tip most blacks try to get their food for free shouldn't be allowed in resturants they should eat in ally with the dogs

You can find jobs out their that pay more than 2.50 an hour. If your good I will tip bit if your not I don't tip. Why pay you to do nothing but bring my plate out and that is it . I will go get the food myself for 20%. If your not happy with what you make look for another job Wendy's pays more that that an hour and they give better service too.

I have to agree with you on this one. I'm not a server but I am in the tipping industry and black people do not tip EVER no matter how good the service is. I'm not racist at all this is a fact!

If I'm waiting 45 minutes for food and I do not see my waitress you are not getting a good tip. I will usually leave a couple of bucks but you need to check in me- act like you are checking on my food.

You misinterpreted what I was stating. 3-5 five is the starting point when you sit down at the table, 8-10 dollar lunches still deserve a good tip because you are taking up space. 20 percent is the minimum by my standards, except for horrible service when sitting at a table, and I don't recall ever tipping less.

ALSO! The server does NOT cook your food. If you food is taking a long time and your server is doing everything they can to speed up your order, don't tip them poorly. We aren't in charge of the kitchen. The people in the kitchen don't care about you. It is our job to make them care. When I used to work in a dinner, I would go in the kitchen and put on a hairnet so I could fry off some simple orders to speed things up. We aren't in charge of cooking, so waiting 45 minutes for food isn't our fault. If there is an issue with the food. Tell us as soon as possible, even if you have to flag us down. We want the order perfect! Do not under any circumstances interrupt while I'm in the middle of speaking with another customer. SO RUDE! When you're at the bank, do other customers push in front of you while you are in the middle to depositing money? NO! So don't do that in a restaurant.

As a server you should still check on me even if it takes 45 minutes. Lie, act like you checked on the food. See if I need another drink. Twice last month I had my child with me and he was begging to go get take out b/c BBW and tumbleweed both took so long to get our order.

What is the minimum wage for workers who receive tips?
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires payment of at least the federal minimum wage to covered, nonexempt employees. An employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay $2.13 an hour in direct wages if that amount plus the tips received equals at least the federal minimum wage, the employee retains all tips and the employee customarily and regularly receives more than $30 a month in tips. If an employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 an hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference.
Some states have minimum wage laws specific to tipped employees. When an employee is subject to both the federal and state wage laws, the employee is entitled to the provisions which provides the greater benefits.
I am no longer in the service industry, but just so you know, 99% of restaurants have a computer system that you have to enter in your tips at the end of the night, & if you don't claim a certain percentage, you have to have a manager's authorization to claim less.. that being said, I worked for an international corporation & all four of our managers would refuse to key in their approval for you to finish your sales reading, meaning you had no option but to claim a certain percentage, so that it will always appear you are making at least $7.25/hr.. they tried to justify it by saying there were plenty of other shifts when we made way more & didn't claim it, so this time is making up for those times.. basically their boss (The District Manager) would tear them a new asshole for ever approving a server to claim less, because the billion dollar corporation didn't want to pay the difference of what you should be making. This also affected the manager's monthly bonuses, so as you can see, they wouldn't want to do it, even if they knew you were right.

& before you again try to justify not tipping, this is how every restaurant is. Just because there is a law passed does not mean it is followed, & trying to fight what you are rightfully owed would completely affect your income, meaning the managers would cut your shifts, give you bad sections, never work you, etc.. there is no way to get around this, that is just a part of working in the service industry, & anyone who has should be aware of this. I would also like to mention that I am a very experienced server, made amazing money at every place I served/bartended at, & am not here to bitch about cheap bastards.

The bottom line is, if you choose to be a bigoted asshole & try to justify why you don't tip accordingly, you should basically not frequent any establishment, because once you've been there a few times, the servers will remember you, just like we do big tippers, & will give you the tip appropriate service you deserve. Yes there are tons of bad servers out there, I encounter them all of the time, & it is true that if you don't make good money serving, it's probably your own damn fault, & I understand why you don't want to tip them 20%, but not tipping at all is not just completely insulting but also shows a lack of character or concern.

Oh & by the way, to whomever said you should get a real job to support your kids & blah blah blah, I made more money working at a chain restaurant then I would with my college degree. It would blow your mind to see how much money one can make with such a "non career" job. Next time you want to look down upon someone bringing you a cheeseburger, if you compared bank accounts you would most likely be humiliated by how much less you make at your 'real' job.

First off let me say I am a server and I highly disapprove of this topic, regardless of how bad a table stiffed you its never a reason to slander them on the internet. Personally I take the good with the bad. Sometimes you get that one person who just needs to treat someone like shit. you can't please everyone but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Karma catches up with us all.

Lotsa typin there. Maybe you missed the "But they'll fire me!" that came right after it, and the sarcasm within that post. I wouldn't hesitate a second to turn somebody in if I was legitimately being paid less than $7.25/hr. What do you have to lose?! Certainly not a good job. And yes, Mr. Manager, I'll call your bluff. FYPM or the IRS shows up. And anybody knows where there's cash involved there's fraud.

Everyone is aware of this jackass, it's not that servers aren't thankful, this is directed toward the consumers who feel that tipping isn't even necessary, or that 20% of their bill is way too much, or whatever.. look at gas prices, look at how EVERYTHING is priced in our economy, the one thing you have the ability to control is the tip & it's bullshit that you think it isn't a necessity. Must be pretty convenient for your family to go out to eat & how much money you save by not tipping the person who is a part of your families good time.
