For added support, you can also place toothpicks or toothpick halves in the ear portion of the cake, before baking. Just lay them on top of the batter, and place the top of mold over the cake, then bake. This will decrease the chance that the ears will break off while frosting. I have also had great luck freezing the cooled cake, after it has baked, and then frost it frozen. This also makes the cake sturdier while frosting.
