So our Assessment Notices this year are required by state law to include an estimate of taxes. And our Assessor's Office screwed up the estimate of taxes due for the City portion of our ad valorem taxes on our homes. The city portion of the taxes is 2 1/2 times higher than it should be.

You would think that the Chief Appraiser and his staff would have checked the notices before they were sent out. After all, this Chief Appraiser has loads of experience and came from Camden County, right?

Well, my friend in Camden County told me that our Chief Appraiser was about to get the ax for screwing up the Tax Digest just before he left Camden County on VERY SHORT NOTICE to take the McIntosh County Chief Appraiser's job.

In fact, my friend told me that the citizens of St. Marys were "marching in the streets" over their 2009 assessments. The real estate market had been in a decline for 2 years and some St. Marys residents received notices with up to 1000% increase in assessed value.

Gosh, I wish our new Chief Appraiser would have found a job somewhere else.

Citizens of Darien, have your checkbooks handy. Your new chief appraiser is clueless.

I would like to know how my assessed value went up $110,000 from last year in this real estate market.

I have made 3 calls to the assessor's office and haven't gotten to talk to anyone, except the clerk, yet.
